This bacterium boosts the immune system, may combat allergies, hypertension, and IBD, and has beneficial effects on the skin.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_is_L_lactis\"><a id=\"post-26813-_igfja27mrfuc\"><\/a><strong>What is <em>L. lactis<\/em>?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>Lactococcus lactis<\/em> is a <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-brains-secret-backup-generator\/\">lactic acid-producing<\/a> Gram-positive species of bacteria used extensively in the production of buttermilk, cheese, pickled vegetables, and other fermented products.<\/p>\n<p><em>L. lactis<\/em> is often studied as a genetically modified organism for the treatment of animal (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27469354\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4658813\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26482408\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27085380\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5006358\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4774141\/\"> R<\/a>) and human diseases (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16716759\">R<\/a>). Its health benefits as a probiotic, however, are not as well-known or researched.<\/p>\n<p>Note that this post is about <em>Lactococcus lactis<\/em>. For more information about the bacterium formerly known as <em>Lactobacillus lactis<\/em>, check out this post on <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/l-delbrueckii\/\"><em>L. delbrueckii<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Antioxidant_Properties\"><a id=\"post-26813-_ifkrjllj1xj9\"><\/a><strong>Antioxidant Properties<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Exopolysaccharide (EPS) of <em>L. lactis<\/em> increased<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/catalase-benefits\/\"> catalase<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-brain-fog-gene-rs4880-or-sod2\/\"> superoxide dismutase<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-brain-fog-gene-rs4880-or-sod2\/\">SOD<\/a>) and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/30-scientifically-proven-health-benefits-glutathione\/\">glutathione<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/gpx1\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\"> peroxidase<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/30-scientifically-proven-health-benefits-glutathione\/\">GSH<\/a>-Px) activity, and decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in mice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23911523\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Potential_Benefits_of_L_lactis\"><a id=\"post-26813-_ulsrpgs6742c\"><\/a><strong>Potential Benefits of L. lactis<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>L. lactis<\/em> probiotic supplements have not been approved by the FDA for medical use and generally lack solid clinical research. Regulations set manufacturing standards for them but don&#8217;t guarantee that they&#8217;re safe or effective. Speak with your doctor before supplementing.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Insufficient_Evidence_For\"><a id=\"post-26813-_2op0volooo5u\"><\/a>Insufficient Evidence For<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The following purported benefits are only supported by limited, low-quality clinical studies. There is insufficient evidence to support the use of <em>L. lactis<\/em> for any of the below-listed uses. Remember to speak with a doctor before taking <em>L. lactis<\/em> probiotic supplements, and never use them in place of something your doctor recommends or prescribes.<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-26813-_mzlkwlgzau7h\"><\/a>1) Skin Health<\/h4>\n<p>Ingestion of milk fermented with <em>L. lactis<\/em> increased sebum production, thereby potentially reinforcing the skin barrier in 23 healthy young women (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25022690\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Ingestion of heat-killed <em>L. lactis<\/em> also maintained skin hydration and improved subjective skin elasticity in 30 middle-aged Japanese women (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4153081\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Animal_Cell_Research_Lacking_Evidence\"><a id=\"post-26813-_zd1yk1ykqcvs\"><\/a>Animal &amp; Cell Research (Lacking Evidence)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>No clinical evidence supports the use of <em>L. lactis<\/em> for any of the conditions listed in this section. Below is a summary of the existing animal and cell-based research, which should guide further investigational efforts. However, the studies listed below should not be interpreted as supportive of any health benefit.<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-26813-_ahk2nq56n0t3\"><\/a>2) Immunity<\/h4>\n<p>Yogurt fermented with <em>L. lactis<\/em> activated plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDC), that are important for both innate and adaptive immune responses (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24239838\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4352084\/\"> R<\/a>), and susceptibility to infection (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24239838\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>It activated natural killer (NK) cells and enhanced their cytotoxic activity (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26623718\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>It improved resistance against pneumococcal infection, possibly by improving pathogen lung clearance, reduces lung injuries and increases the survival of infected mice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18772925\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18667039\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>L. lactis<\/em>-fed mice have drastically improved survival rate, reduced <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-effective-ways-to-lose-weight\/\">weight loss<\/a>, and reduced lung damage when infected by murine parainfluenza virus (mPIV1) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4352084\/\">R<\/a>) or the H1N1 influenza virus (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22642647\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/kefir\/\">Kefir<\/a>-isolated <em>L. lactis<\/em> protect cells from <em>C. difficile<\/em> toxins (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23217732\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-26813-_sgddvt3hoi3h\"><\/a>3) Allergies<\/h4>\n<p>Both live and heat-killed <em>L. lactis<\/em> reduced the severity of allergic response in mice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3564272\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3179883\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17481709\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>It decreased the<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th2-dominant\/\"> Th2<\/a> response (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3179883\/\">R<\/a>) and induces a <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th1-dominant\/\">Th1<\/a>-polarizing program in dendritic cells in mice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17481709\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>It significantly attenuates atopic esophageal and bronchoalveolar eosinophilic inflammation in mice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27259693\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Ethanol can increase allergic responses. <em>L. lactis<\/em> was shown to restore <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oral-tolerance\/\">oral tolerance<\/a> in mice, by reducing local and systemic allergic outcomes such as <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/il4\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">IL-4<\/a> and IgE (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26110492\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Oral treatment of newborn pigs with <em>L. lactis<\/em> significantly reduced the subsequent frequency of allergy, by dampening the Th-2 immune response (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21134696\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-26813-_aaixmcsv21gm\"><\/a>4) IBD<\/h4>\n<p>Soy milk fermented with <em>L. lactis<\/em> exhibited anti-inflammatory effects and prevents IBD in mice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25887264\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4126083\/\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Administration of heat-killed <em>L. lactis<\/em> suppressed IBD symptoms, such as shortening of colon length, damage to the colon mucosa, and spleen enlargement in mice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4965518\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>It reduced inflammatory cytokine production and nitric oxide expression in mice with <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ibd-ulcerative-colitis-crohn-genetics-lifestyle-stress-infections\/\">colitis<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19733697\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-26813-_2msvtzd0b1yt\"><\/a>5) Heart Health<\/h4>\n<p><em>L. lactis<\/em> reduced blood pressure, LDL <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cholesterol\/\">cholesterol<\/a>, and triglyceride contents in hypertensive rats (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23628247\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Milk fermented by <em>L. lactis<\/em> exhibited systolic and diastolic blood pressure- and heart-rate-lowering effect in rats with hypertension (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23168230\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-26813-_81m0d8oqnwcs\"><\/a>6) Aging<\/h4>\n<p>Long-term oral intake of <em>L. lactis<\/em> suppressed the reduction of bone density and body weight in senescence-accelerated mice, a model of aging (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17617939\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h5><a id=\"post-26813-_4yhzlumzsk15\"><\/a>Age-Related Hearing Loss<\/h5>\n<p>Intake of heat-killed <em>L. lactis<\/em> altered the intestinal flora, affected plasma metabolite levels, including fatty acid levels, and slowed down age-related hearing loss in mice, by inhibiting the loss of neurons and hair cells in mouse inner ear (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4802309\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Cancer_Research\"><a id=\"post-26813-_uioygnnn7s2\"><\/a><strong>Cancer Research<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>L. lactis<\/em> inhibited the proliferation of lung cancer cells, colorectal cancer cells, gastric carcinoma cells and breast cancer cells (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26165315\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The cytoplasmic fraction of <em>L. lactis<\/em> inhibited human stomach cancer cell proliferation and induces cancer cell death (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19723065\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>These cell studies may not be relevant at all for cancer treatment in animals or humans.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Mechanisms\"><a id=\"post-26813-_qpwk6tvzyfss\"><\/a><strong>Mechanisms<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In cells and animals, researchers have observed that <em>L. lactis<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Decreased<a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/il4\/\"> IL-4<\/a> in allergy (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3564272\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21205006\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26110492\"> R<\/a>) and increases<a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/il4\/\"> IL-4<\/a> in infection (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18772925\">R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Decreased <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/il-8\/\">IL-8<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4126083\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19733697\"> R<\/a>), <a href=\"http:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/IL13\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">IL-13<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3179883\/\">R<\/a>), and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/IL18\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">IL-18<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26165315\">R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Increased (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4126083\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23102661\"> R<\/a>) and decreased <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interleukin-6\/\">IL-6<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19733697\">R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Increased <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/il-10\/\">IL-10<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4126083\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18772925\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23102661\"> R<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/IL12a\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">IL-12<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23102661\">R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Decreased <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interferon-gamma-how-to-increase-decrease-high-low-levels\/\">IFN-\u03b3<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19733697\">R<\/a>) in inflammation and increased <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interferon-gamma-how-to-increase-decrease-high-low-levels\/\">IFN-\u03b3<\/a> in allergy and infection (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3564272\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23102661\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24239838\"> R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Decreased <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-lifestyle-factors-influence-tnf-interleukin-6-il-6\/\">TNF-\u03b1<\/a> in inflammation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19733697\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26165315\"> R<\/a>) and increased TNF-\u03b1 in infection and anti-tumor response (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27459336\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18772925\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23102661\"> R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Increased <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/treg\/\">Tregs<\/a> bearing surface <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/tgf\/\">TGF<\/a>-\u03b2 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4126083\/\">R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Decreased NO (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26165315\">R<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/nos2\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">iNOS<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19733697\">R<\/a>) in inflammation (a study where<a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/nos2\/\"> iNOS<\/a> was increased:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27459336\"> R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Decreased MIP-2 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19733697\">R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Decreased IgE (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3564272\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26110492\"> R<\/a>) and increased IgA, IgG (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18772925\">R<\/a>), and IgG2 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3564272\/\">R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Decreased NOD-1, NOD-2, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/tlr4\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">TLR-4<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3564272\/\">R<\/a>), CCL11 (eotaxin-1), CCL17 (TARC) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3179883\/\">R<\/a>) and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cox2-natural-cox2-inhibitors\/\">COX-2<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26165315\">R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Inhibited the activity of angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23168230\">R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span id=\"Safety\"><a id=\"post-26813-_on1qwruqldh5\"><\/a><strong>Safety<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>L. lactis<\/em> is mostly nonpathogenic in humans; however, a number of cases of infection with <em>L. lactis<\/em> have been reported over the years (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27031463\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Some strains of <em>L. lactis<\/em> produce the <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/deal-histamine\/\">biogenic amines<\/a> putrescine and tyramine (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26471528\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/probiotics-good-bacteria\/\">Probiotics<\/a> should be avoided in patients with organ failure, immunocompromised status, and dysfunctional gut barrier mechanisms, where they may cause infections. <strong>To avoid adverse effects, talk to your doctor before starting any new
