Learn more here.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_is_Lactobacillus_brevis\"><strong>What is <em>Lactobacillus brevis<\/em>?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>Lactobacillus brevis<\/em> is a plant-derived <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-brains-secret-backup-generator\/\">lactic acid<\/a> bacterium isolated from \u2018Suguki\u2019, a traditional Japanese pickle produced in Kyoto (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4285317\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/l-brevis\/\"><em>L. brevis<\/em><\/a> can be found in fermented foods such as sauerkraut and pickles. It is also a normal part of the human <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/how-your-gut-microbiota-can-make-you-fat-or-thin\/\">gut microbiota<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Health_Benefits_of_L_brevis\"><strong>Health Benefits of L. brevis<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>L. brevis<\/em> probiotic supplements have not been approved by the FDA for medical use and generally lack solid clinical research. Regulations set manufacturing standards for them but don&#8217;t guarantee that they&#8217;re safe or effective. Speak with your doctor before supplementing.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Possibly_Effective_For\">Possibly Effective For<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4>1) Immunity<\/h4>\n<p><em>L. brevis<\/em> reduced the incidence of influenza in 1089 elementary school children. The improvement was especially pronounced in unvaccinated individuals (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4285317\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Oral administration of live, but not heat-killed, <em>L. brevis<\/em> significantly increased IFN-\u03b1 production in 60 volunteers. The intake tended to be most beneficial in subjects with initially low levels of IFN-\u03b1 production (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8829098\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>L. brevis<\/em> alleviated influenza virus infection symptoms in mice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24329975\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>L. brevis<\/em> enhanced cytotoxic activity of mouse splenocytes (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25376258\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>L. brevis<\/em> exhibited antiviral activity towards herpes virus (HSV-2) and inhibits HSV-2 multiplication (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21621625\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4>2) Dental Health<\/h4>\n<p><em>L. brevis<\/em> improved oral pH<em>,<\/em> reduced salivary <em>Streptococcus mutans,<\/em> and reduced bleeding on probing in 191 high caries risk schoolchildren (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3936134\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>L. brevis<\/em> had anti-inflammatory effects and brought about the total disappearance or amelioration of clinical symptoms in 8 healthy subjects and 21 patients with periodontitis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17577323\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>L. brevis<\/em> exerted oral anti-inflammatory properties, possibly by preventing nitric oxide synthesis, in 34 healthy adults (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25720615\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>L. brevis<\/em> inhibited periodontal inflammation, significantly decreased bone loss and lowered the count of anaerobic bacteria in mice with periodontitis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4119090\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4>3) Gut Health<\/h4>\n<h5>Constipation<\/h5>\n<p>Heat-killed <em>L. brevis <\/em>improved intestinal function in 32 women with <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/causes-ibs-general-gut-dysfunction\/\">constipation<\/a> and promoted the growth of <em>Bifidobacteria <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4034292\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Marked enhancement of NK-cell activity and improved bowel symptoms were observed in 44 female students with constipation, who consumed pickles containing dead <em>L. brevis<\/em> cells (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24418874\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<aside class=\"sh-partner shp-form sponsored sh-et-7388fa\">\n  <div>\n          <div class=\"partner-heading\">Get the Regimen of A Top Biohacker<\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"partner-content\">\n      <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Joe Cohen is well-known for his work as a successful entrepreneur in the health field after he overcame his many health issues using a personalized regimen. There is insufficient evidence to support the use of <em>L. brevis<\/em> probiotics for any of the below-listed uses. Remember to speak with a doctor before taking <em>L. brevis <\/em>probiotics, and never use them in place of something your doctor recommends or prescribes.<\/p>\n<h4>4) Sleep<\/h4>\n<p>In 17 volunteers with insomnia, <em>L. brevis<\/em> showed a mildly beneficial effect on <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/health-benefits-sleep\/\">sleep<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27013460\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Daily voluntary wheel-running and sleep rhythmicity become intensified in mice when heat-killed <em>L. brevis<\/em> is added to the diet (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25058921\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4>5) Oral Mucositis<\/h4>\n<p>Oral mucositis is one of the most common, debilitating complications of cancer treatments, particularly chemotherapy and radiation. In 200 patients, <em>L. brevis<\/em> reduced the incidence and severity of anticancer therapy-induced oral mucositis and improved the tolerance to chemo-radiotherapy, and anticancer treatment completion (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21741230\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4>6) MSG<\/h4>\n<p>Capsules containing <em>L. brevis<\/em> reduced monosodium <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/glutamate\/\">glutamate<\/a> (MGS) levels and MSG symptom complex in 30 humans (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4667210\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>L. brevis<\/em> inhibited the absorption of MSG from the intestine into the blood in mice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25394513\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Animal_Cell_Research\">Animal &amp; Cell Research<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>No clinical evidence supports the use of <em>L. brevis <\/em>probiotics for any of the conditions listed in this section. Below is a summary of the existing animal and cell-based research, which should guide further investigational efforts. However, the studies listed below should not be interpreted as supportive of any health benefit.<\/p>\n<h4>7) Allergy<\/h4>\n<p><em>L. brevis<\/em> induced <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th1-dominant\/\">Th1<\/a> cytokines, inhibited <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th2-dominant\/\">Th2<\/a> cytokines, reduced anti-allergen antibodies and suppressed systemic anaphylaxis in mice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23985541\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>L. brevis<\/em> inhibited IgE production and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/histamine\/\">histamine<\/a> secretion in allergic mice by shifting the Th1\/Th2 balance toward <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-foods-exercise-right-type-th1-vs-th2-dominance\/\">Th1 dominance<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18055049\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Oral administration of <em>L. brevis<\/em> significantly inhibited IgE production, swelling, and the development of atopic dermatitis in mice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18451512\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4>8) Cholesterol<\/h4>\n<p><em>L. brevis<\/em> reduced cholesterol in rats and decreased low-density lipoprotein (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ldl-cholesterol\/\">LDL<\/a>) cholesterol levels (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23415664\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4>9) Fat Metabolism<\/h4>\n<p>In a cell study, <em>L. brevis<\/em> inhibited fat cell production, cellular triglyceride accumulation, and GPDH activity (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24453065\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4>10) Appetite<\/h4>\n<p><em>L. brevis<\/em> enhanced appetite in mice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23391754\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4>11) Diabetes<\/h4>\n<p><em>L. brevis<\/em> decreased <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/glucose\/\">glucose<\/a> levels in diabetic rats (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27013462\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>L. brevis<\/em> supplementation was associated with increased <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/insulin-101\/\">insulin<\/a> levels in healthy rats (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27013462\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4>12) Liver Function<\/h4>\n<p>Oral administration of <em>L. brevis<\/em> ameliorated ethanol-induced liver injury and the fatty liver in mice. It significantly inhibited <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/alanine-aminotransferase\/\">ALT<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/aspartate-aminotransferase-ast\/\">AST<\/a> increase, and decreased TG and total cholesterol in the liver (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18976829\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4>13) Skin Health<\/h4>\n<p><em>L. brevis<\/em> increased blood flow and decreases transepidermal water loss in rats, suggesting that it could be a useful substance in skin health, specifically chapped or dry skin. This has not been investigated in humans (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24410864\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4>14) Pesticides<\/h4>\n<p>Organophosphorus hydrolase (OpdB) of <em>L. brevis<\/em> is able to degrade organophosphorus pesticides (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20405842\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Cancer_Research\"><strong>Cancer Research<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>An antitumor molecule derived from <em>L. brevis<\/em> inhibited colon adenocarcinoma cell viability and the growth of these cells in mice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26851013\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The relevance of this study to human cancers is unknown, and <strong>cell studies should never be used to justify taking <em>L. brevis<\/em> or any other supplement.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Mechanism_of_Effect\"><strong>Mechanism of Effect<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In cells and animals, researchers have observed that <em>L. brevis<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Shifted the Th1\/Th2 balance toward Th1 dominance (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18451512\">R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Polarized M1 macrophages to M2-like macrophages (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23742179\">R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Increased IgA (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24329975\">R<\/a>) and inhibited IgE (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18451512\">R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Beneficially affected various physiological processes via the <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/how-to-increase-serotonin\">serotonin<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/serotonin-happy-neurotransmitter\/\">5-HT<\/a>3 receptor (<a (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17577323\">R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Decreased <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interleukin-1\/\">IL-1\u03b2<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26925602\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25766132\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23742179\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21987297\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4119090\/\">R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Increased <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/il-10\/\">IL-10<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23742179\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18451512\">R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Both decreased (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21987297\">R<\/a>) and increased <a
