It can also produce <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-brains-secret-backup-generator\/\">lactic acid<\/a> and is therefore sometimes misclassified as <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/b-coagulans\/\"><em>Lactobacillus sporogenes<\/em><\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6025323\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19622453\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Potential_Health_Benefits\"><a id=\"post-26647-_g0gy07pp90a\"><\/a><strong>Potential Health Benefits<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>B. coagulans<\/em> probiotics have not been approved by the FDA for medical use and generally lack solid clinical research. Regulations set manufacturing standards for them but don&#8217;t guarantee that they&#8217;re safe or effective. Speak with your doctor before supplementing.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Possibly_Effective\"><a id=\"post-26647-_bl3dospgsvnf\"><\/a>Possibly Effective<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><a id=\"post-26647-_u0zjpgoaxlyo\"><\/a>1) Gut Health<\/h4>\n<h5><a id=\"post-26647-_4bev9fq3fs4i\"><\/a>IBS<\/h5>\n<p>In multiple clinical trials, <em>B. coagulans<\/em> <strong>decreased bloating, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and stool frequency<\/strong> and increased the quality of life in patients with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4769834\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20140275\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19332970\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4129566\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A combination of simethicone and <em>B. coagulans<\/em> reduced bloating and discomfort in patients with IBS [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24867512\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h5><a id=\"post-26647-_pt97xjrm2jk\"><\/a>Gut Microbiota<\/h5>\n<p><em>B. coagulans<\/em> elevates beneficial bacteria (<em>Faecalibacterium prausnitzii<\/em>, <em>Clostridium lituseburense<\/em>, <em>Bacillus spp<\/em>. and <em>Eubacterium rectale<\/em>) levels in volunteers. This treatment also elevated plasma nitric oxide (NO) and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/30-scientifically-proven-health-benefits-glutathione\/\">glutathione<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/30-scientifically-proven-health-benefits-glutathione\/\">GSH<\/a>) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26209256\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-26647-_rski7im0ef7f\"><\/a>3) Blood Lipids<\/h4>\n<p>A synbiotic containing <em>B. coagulans <\/em>reduced TAG,<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/vldl-cholesterol-levels\/\"> VLDL<\/a> and elevated GSH levels in 52 pregnant women [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24271261\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><em>B. coagulans <\/em>reduced total blood cholesterol, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ldl-cholesterol\/\">LDL<\/a>-cholesterol, and marginally increased <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/hdl-cholesterol\/\">HDL<\/a>-cholesterol in a small-scale clinical study of 17 patients [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2079358\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2086441\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Insufficient_Evidence_For\"><a id=\"post-26647-_mhr7ras90kjq\"><\/a>Insufficient Evidence For<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Researchers are currently investigating whether <em>B. coagulans <\/em>has other health benefits. The potential benefits in this section have produced positive results in at least one clinical trial, but these studies are small, contradictory, or otherwise limited.
