Remember to speak with a doctor before taking probiotics, and never use them to replace something your doctor recommends or prescribes.<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-26508-_enfmbhd2btl5\"><\/a>4) Obesity<\/h4>\n<p><em>B. breve<\/em> significantly<strong> lowered fat mass<\/strong> and improved \u03b3-glutamyltranspeptidase and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein in 52 adults with a tendency for<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/132-biological-mechanisms-for-weight-modulation\/\"> obesity<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4463018\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>B. breve<\/em> <strong>reduced body<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-effective-ways-to-lose-weight\/\"><strong> weight<\/strong><\/a><strong> gain<\/strong> and accumulation of visceral fat in a dose-dependent manner, and <strong>improved serum levels of total cholesterol, fasting glucose and<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/insulin-101\/\"><strong> insulin<\/strong><\/a> in a mouse model of diet-induced obesity (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20699581\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>B. breve<\/em> modified gene expression of pathways involved in lipid metabolism, response to stress and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-tips-for-fixing-insulin-resistance\/\"> insulin sensitivity<\/a> in multiple mouse studies (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23666099\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20699581\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Soy germ isoflavones fermented by <em>B. breve<\/em> lowered triglyceride (TG) levels and suppressed the absorption of excessive lipids and fat cell differentiation in rats (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17673827\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-26508-_iizafmck8yw\"><\/a>5) Necrotizing Enterocolitis<\/h4>\n<p><em>B. breve<\/em> was associated with decreased risk of necrotizing enterocolitis in 1755 neonates (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4783036\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Oral administration of <em>B. breve<\/em> reduced the production of butyric acid in 66 infants, which may be helpful in protecting low birth weight infants from digestive diseases such as necrotizing enterocolitis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17255840\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>However, one study found <strong>no benefit in <em>B. breve<\/em> administration for the prevention of necrotizing enterocolitis and late-onset sepsis in 1315 very preterm infants<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26628328\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>B. breve<\/em> suppresses inflammation, reduced the pathology and increases survival in rats with necrotizing enterocolitis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26420070\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>B. breve<\/em> suppressed inflammation in weaning rats with colitis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26083761\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>B. breve <\/em>significantly attenuated the severity of colitis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4008378\/\">R<\/a>) and inflammatory cytokine expression in mice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2667252\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24533977\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-26508-_yipbpkf4g1t3\"><\/a>6) Celiac Disease<\/h4>\n<p><em>B. breve<\/em> <strong>decreases the production of the pro-inflammatory cytokine<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-lifestyle-factors-influence-tnf-interleukin-6-il-6\/\"><strong> TNF<\/strong><\/a><strong>-\u03b1<\/strong> in 49 children with Celiac disease on a gluten-free diet (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26134988\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-26508-_ctrknb1ro0ae\"><\/a>7) Infection<\/h4>\n<p><em>B. breve<\/em> significantly inhibited rotavirus multiplication and <strong>prevented rotavirus infection<\/strong> in 10 infants (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10356887\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Oral administration of <em>B. breve<\/em> enhances antigen-specific IgA antibody against rotavirus and prevents rotavirus-induced diarrhea in mouse pups (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7622883\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>B. breve <\/em>enhances the antiviral immune response (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC368237\/\">R<\/a>). Mice fed <em>Bifidobacterium breve<\/em> and immunized orally with influenza virus were more strongly <strong>protected against influenza virus infection<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC95685\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Orally administered <em>B. breve<\/em> improved the intestinal environment and suppressed bacterial translocation in pediatric surgical cases (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26859092\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4424709\/\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Animal_Cell_Research_Lacking_Evidence\"><a id=\"post-26508-_dcrlwjv4zv1k\"><\/a>Animal &amp; Cell Research (Lacking Evidence)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>No clinical evidence supports the use of <em>B. breve<\/em> for any of the conditions listed in this section. However, the studies listed below should not be interpreted as supportive of any health benefit.<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-26508-_nnglb9xcnkhz\"><\/a>8) Asthma<\/h4>\n<p><em>B. breve<\/em> showed promising probiotic properties and beneficial immunomodulatory activity in blood cells taken from volunteers with allergic asthma (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4446640\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>B. breve<\/em> had strong<strong> anti-inflammatory properties<\/strong> in asthmatic mice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4029990\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>B. breve<\/em> combined with fructooligosaccharides <strong>prevented allergic airway inflammation<\/strong> in mice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4819948\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>B. breve<\/em> with non-digestible oligosaccharides suppressed pulmonary airway inflammation, T cell activation, and mast cell degranulation in mice with asthma (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24440361\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-26508-_1hoez86b9unh\"><\/a>9) BDNF<\/h4>\n<p><em>B. breve<\/em> increased total<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-natural-ways-to-increase-bdnf\/\"> BDNF<\/a> total in rats (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21986359\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-26508-_dmddxnek54yq\"><\/a>10) Cigarette Smoke Associated Pulmonary Diseases<\/h4>\n<p>Based on anti-inflammatory effects in human blood cells activated by cigarette smoke, <em>B. breve<\/em> is being investigated for its potential to help cigarette smoke-associated diseases such as Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4552661\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Mechanism_of_Effect\"><a id=\"post-26508-_kz2y37yr1jr8\"><\/a><strong>Mechanism of Effect<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Researchers have investigated the mechanism of the effect of <em>B. breve<\/em> in cell and animal studies.
