It\u2019s subspecies <em>B. longum<\/em> subsp. <em>infantis<\/em> is one of the earliest bacteria to colonize the infant gut.<em> B. longum<\/em> is often added to food products as a probiotic with various health benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Previously considered separate species, <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/b-longum\/\"><em>B. infantis<\/em><\/a> and <em>B. suis<\/em> were shown to be subspecies of <em>B. longum<\/em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18398167\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Potential_Benefits_of_B_longum\"><a id=\"post-26413-_1fn8tpmz59k9\"><\/a><strong>Potential Benefits of <em>B. longum<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>B. longum<\/em> probiotic supplements have not been approved by the FDA for medical use. Supplements generally lack solid clinical research. Regulations set manufacturing standards for them but don&#8217;t guarantee that they&#8217;re safe or effective. longum <\/em>has other health benefits. The potential benefits in this section have produced positive results in at least one clinical trial, but these studies are small, contradictory, or otherwise limited. Talk to your doctor before supplementing with <em>B. longum <\/em>for any reason.<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-26413-_x1eexld76nkk\"><\/a>4) Inflammation<\/h4>\n<p><em>B. longum<\/em> ssp. <em>infantis<\/em> reduced proinflammatory markers in patients with <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ibd-ulcerative-colitis-crohn-genetics-lifestyle-stress-infections\/\">ulcerative colitis<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/chronic-fatigue-syndrome-real-heres-test\/\">chronic fatigue syndrome<\/a>, and psoriasis [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3744517\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><em>B. longum <\/em>reduced inflammation and improved symptoms in patients with ulcerative colitis [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1774839\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><em>B. longum <\/em>significantly alleviated inflammation in mice with gout [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26322542\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><em>B. longum<\/em> ssp. <em>infantis<\/em> suppressed proinflammatory <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/th17\/\">IL-17<\/a> cytokine production and may be useful in the treatment of <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th1-dominant\/\">Th1<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/th17\/\">7<\/a>-mediated diseases [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18636171\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-26413-_fzwrwrgwpkd6\"><\/a>5) Allergies<\/h4>\n<p>Intake of yogurt or powder supplemented with <em>B. longum<\/em> <strong>alleviated subjective symptoms<\/strong> and affected blood markers <strong>of allergy<\/strong> in individuals with Japanese cedar pollinosis [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17893165\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19291170\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17259812\"> R<\/a>].
