Read on to find out.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_is_Lactobacillus_crispatus\">What is <em>Lactobacillus <\/em>crispatus?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Lactobacilli inhabiting the human vagina are the first line of defense in the female urogenital and reproductive tracts. <em>Lactobacillus crispatus<\/em> is prevalent in the healthy cervicovaginal <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/how-your-gut-microbiota-can-make-you-fat-or-thin\/\">microbiota<\/a>, where it produces <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-brains-secret-backup-generator\/\">lactic acid<\/a>, a potent broad-spectrum bactericide, and virucide, and acts as an immunomodulatory agent (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27492695\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Health_Benefits_of_L_crispatus\">Health Benefits of <em>L. crispatus<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>L. crispatus<\/em> probiotic supplements have not been approved by the FDA for medical use and generally lack solid clinical research. Regulations set manufacturing standards for them but don&#8217;t guarantee that they&#8217;re safe or effective. Speak with your doctor before supplementing.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Insufficient_Evidence_For\">Insufficient Evidence For<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The following purported benefits are only supported by limited, low-quality clinical studies. There is insufficient evidence to support the use of <em>L. crispatus<\/em> probiotics for any of the below-listed uses. Remember to speak with a doctor before taking <em>L. crispatus, <\/em>and never use it in place of something your doctor recommends or prescribes.<\/p>\n<h4>1) Female Urogenital Health<\/h4>\n<p><em>L. crispatus<\/em> reduced recurrent urinary tract infections in 100 premenopausal women [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3079401\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><em>L. crispatus<\/em> inhibited <em>Chlamydia trachomatis<\/em>, the most common sexually transmitted bacterial pathogen, in human epithelial cells and macrophages [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26372530\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4926251\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><em>L. crispatus<\/em> promoted defense against <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/treat-cure-candida\/\"><em>Candida<\/em><\/a><em> albicans<\/em> infection in cell studies [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24120511\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4054921\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><em>L. crispatus<\/em> inhibited <em>E. coli<\/em> activity [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4013016\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Cervicovaginal mucus with high <em>L. crispatus<\/em> concentrations trapped the HIV virus in a lab setting. It is unclear whether this result has any relevance to HIV infection in a clinical setting, and <strong>we recommend strongly against attempting to use <em>L. crispatus <\/em>to prevent HIV<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4611035\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Animal_Cell_Research_Lacking_Evidence\">Animal &amp; Cell Research (Lacking Evidence)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>No clinical evidence supports the use of <em>L. crispatus<\/em> for any of the conditions listed in this section. Below is a summary of the existing animal and cell-based research, which should guide further investigational efforts.
