It produces organic acids, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-brains-secret-backup-generator\/\">lactic acid<\/a> and acetic acid, from carbohydrates, which can inhibit the growth of surrounding microorganisms. It also produces hydrogen peroxide and other antimicrobial substances (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3769017\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>This bacterium is believed to stimulate the immune system, improve intestinal disease and promote well-being (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20441548\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Health_Benefits_of_L_salivarius\"><a id=\"post-25692-_7p7zu35zj2pm\"><\/a><strong>Health Benefits of <em>L. salivarius<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>L. salivarius<\/em> probiotic supplements have not been approved by the FDA for medical use. Supplements generally lack solid clinical research. Regulations set manufacturing standards for them but don&#8217;t guarantee that they&#8217;re safe or effective. Speak with your doctor before supplementing.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Possibly_Effective_For\"><a id=\"post-25692-_1c9alstr9h1d\"><\/a>Possibly Effective For<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><a id=\"post-25692-_u2uloq9rc3zz\"><\/a>1) Dental Health<\/h4>\n<p><em>L. salivarius<\/em> beneficially changed the bacterial population of gum plaque in 66 volunteers (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19453574\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>L. salivarius <\/em>increased resistance to caries<\/strong> risk factors in 64 healthy volunteers (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4236677\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Oral administration of <em>L. salivarius<\/em> improved bad breath, showed beneficial effects on bleeding on probing from the periodontal pocket, and inhibited the reproduction of \u201cbad\u201d bacteria (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20659698\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24556493\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3769017\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22368259\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Periodontal clinical parameters especially improved in smokers (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18727656\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>However, the authors of one study suggested that <em>L. salivarius<\/em> itself may possess an inherent cariogenic activity following adherence to the tooth surface (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16251792\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Insufficient_Evidence_For\"><a id=\"post-25692-_c00bmgrgpih1\"><\/a>Insufficient Evidence For<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The following purported benefits are only supported by limited, low-quality clinical studies. There is insufficient evidence to support the use of <em>L. salivarius<\/em> for any of the below-listed uses. Remember to speak with a doctor before taking <em>L. salivarius<\/em> probiotic supplements, and never use them in place of something your doctor recommends or prescribes.<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-25692-_yw9zy5nkf7b4\"><\/a>2) Obesity<\/h4>\n<p><strong><em>L. salivarius<\/em> increased the ratio of beneficial bacteria<\/strong> (<em>Bacteroides<\/em>, <em>Prevotellae<\/em>, and <em>Porphyromonas<\/em>) to <em>Firmicutes<\/em>-belonging bacteria in obese adolescents (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4926461\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>6-week supplementation of <em>L. salivarius<\/em> along with fructooligosaccharide (FOS) significantly<strong> reduced total cholesterol<\/strong>, \u201cbad\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ldl-cholesterol\/\">LDL<\/a>) cholesterol, and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/triglycerides\/\">triglycerides<\/a>, and increased \u201cgood\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/hdl-cholesterol\/\">HDL<\/a>) cholesterol in 45 human subjects. Blood inflammatory markers were also significantly reduced (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25331262\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-25692-_ixuccag9vw05\"><\/a>3) Immunity<\/h4>\n<p>Daily administration of <em>L. salivarius<\/em> to 40 healthy adults was safe and improved<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/how-your-gut-microbiota-can-make-you-fat-or-thin\/\"> gut microbiota<\/a> and different parameters related to immune response (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20159049\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>L. <em>salivarius<\/em> enhanced both innate and acquired immune responses in human cells (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20219262\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-25692-_s2z9y5qzo692\"><\/a>4) Dermatitis<\/h4>\n<p><em>L. salivarius<\/em> improved symptoms in children (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25291124\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21895621\"> R<\/a>), and adults with atopic dermatitis (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22230409\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-25692-_gjr6qdvddgly\"><\/a>5) Mastitis<\/h4>\n<p>Oral administration of <em>L. salivarius<\/em> during late pregnancy prevented mastitis (breast infection) in 108 women (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26611780\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Animal_Cell_Research_Lacking_Evidence\"><a id=\"post-25692-_eiywencrid7s\"><\/a>Animal &amp; Cell Research (Lacking Evidence)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>No clinical evidence supports the use of <em>L. salivarius<\/em> for any of the conditions listed in this section. Below is a summary of the existing animal and cell-based research, which should guide further investigational efforts. However, the studies listed below should not be interpreted as supportive of any health benefit.<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-25692-_y00kw3aqekqm\"><\/a>6) Antibacterial Activity<\/h4>\n<p><em>L. salivarius<\/em> produces a bacteriocin, an antimicrobial substance, that can significantly protect mice against infection with the invasive foodborne pathogen <em>Listeria monocytogenes<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1863472\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-25692-_ckvf6yfhtnj4\"><\/a>7) <em>H. pylori<\/em><\/h4>\n<p><em>L. salivarius<\/em> suppressed <em>H. pylori<\/em> and reduced infection-induced inflammatory responses in mice (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9820379\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>This inhibition is strain specific, though, and a study showed that only 9 out of the 28 <em>L. salivarius<\/em> strains tested inhibited <em>H. pylori<\/em> growth (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18263567\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-25692-_v4kk6v1p31cm\"><\/a>8) Gut Inflammation<\/h4>\n<p><em>L. salivarius <\/em>facilitates the recovery of the inflamed tissue in rat <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ibd-ulcerative-colitis-crohn-genetics-lifestyle-stress-infections\/\">colitis<\/a>, by ameliorating the production of inflammatory mediators, such as cytokines, including <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-lifestyle-factors-influence-tnf-interleukin-6-il-6\/\">TNF-\u03b1<\/a> and NO (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4320393\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-25692-_xyyhsc6kcib4\"><\/a>9) Diabetes<\/h4>\n<p>Treating diabetic mice with dead <em>L. salivarius<\/em> reversed gut microbial imbalance, restored mucosal antibacterial protein and lessened <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/lipopolysaccharides\/\">endotoxin<\/a> levels (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27376728\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-25692-_q02w5mvmcq0c\"><\/a>10) Liver Function<\/h4>\n<p>Pretreatment with <em>L. salivarius<\/em> improved acute liver injury in rats (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24639205\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>L.<\/em> <em>salivarius<\/em> exerts a good health-promoting effect in acute liver failure (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27585996\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-25692-_woj9opldad7q\"><\/a>11) Asthma<\/h4>\n<p><em>L. salivarius<\/em> decreased the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines and showed beneficial immunomodulatory activity in blood cells drawn from asthmatic subjects (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4446640\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>L. salivarius<\/em> decreased allergen-induced airway response in mice (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20555399\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>L. salivarius<\/em> alleviated the clinical symptoms, airway hyperreactivity and airway inflammation in mice with asthma (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4555661\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Cancer_Research\"><a id=\"post-25692-_le7lq92l33k7\"><\/a><strong>Cancer Research<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>L. salivarius<\/em> suppressed colon carcinogenesis in rats (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24754742\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>L. salivarius<\/em> killed oral cancer cells and inhibits cancer growth in rats (<a href=\"http:\/\/cancerpreventionresearch.aacrjournals.org\/content\/6\/7\/686.long\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The relevance of these studies to human cancer is unknown.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Mechanisms\"><a id=\"post-25692-_te038sm0l2tb\"><\/a><strong>Mechanisms<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In cell and animal studies, researchers have observed that <em>L. salivarius<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduced inflammatory markers such as hs-<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/c-reactive-protein\/\">CRP<\/a>, interleukins <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interleukin-6\/\">IL-6<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interleukin-1\/\">IL-1\u03b2<\/a>, TNF\u03b1 and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/tgf\/\">TGF<\/a>-\u03b2 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25331262\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4446640\/\"> R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Reduced elevated <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/alanine-aminotransferase\/\">ALT<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/aspartate-aminotransferase-ast\/\">AST<\/a> and total <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/bilirubin-benefit-how-to-optimize\/\">bilirubin<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24639205\">R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Increased <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/il-10\/\">IL-10<\/a> and \/or <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interferon-gamma-how-to-increase-decrease-high-low-levels\/\">IFN\u03b3<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24639205\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4446640\/\"> R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Improved the <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th1-dominant\/\">Th1<\/a>\/<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th2-dominant\/\">Th2<\/a> balance in asthma mice (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4555661\/\">R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Reduced <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/eosinophil\/\">eosinophil<\/a> influx, IgE, and eotaxin in asthma (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20555399\">R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span id=\"Safety\"><a id=\"post-25692-_jprlv1rfurdt\"><\/a><strong>Safety<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A formula containing <em>L. salivarius<\/em> was shown to be safe and well-tolerated in human clinical trials (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20159049\">R<\/a>), including a trial with 6-month-old infants (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20018483\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>L. salivarius<\/em> was shown to be nonpathogenic for mice, even in doses 10,000 times higher than those normally consumed by humans (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17638967\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Use in patients with organ failure, immunocompromised status, and dysfunctional gut barrier mechanisms should be avoided as it can lead to infections. <strong>To avoid adverse effects, talk to your doctor before starting any new probiotic
