While it has many health benefits, an excess amount of this hormone can cause health problems as well. Read below to learn about its pros and cons.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_Is_Growth_Hormone\"><strong>What Is Growth Hormone?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Growth hormone (GH), also known as somatotropin, is a peptide hormone that stimulates growth, increases muscle mass, reduces fat mass, and helps maintain normal blood <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/glucose\/\">glucose<\/a> levels [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3262362\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>GH is synthesized and secreted by a brain region called the anterior pituitary gland. Its secretion is primarily controlled by two hormones: GH-releasing hormone (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/growth-hormone-releasing-hormone-101\/\">GHRH<\/a>) and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/somatostatin-function-benefits\/\">somatostatin<\/a>. GHRH stimulates the release of GH into the bloodstream, while somatostatin inhibits it [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3262362\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>GH is secreted episodically. Because it has multiple important functions other than promoting growth, this hormone is secreted during all stages of life. GH secretion [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC303577\/\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is low during childhood but increases slightly until puberty<\/li>\n<li>Is greatly increased during puberty until it decreases in late adolescence<\/li>\n<li>Remains stable until approximately 30 years old in age<\/li>\n<li>Progressively declines from 30 years old on<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span id=\"Role_of_Growth_Hormone_in_Growth\"><strong>Role of Growth Hormone in Growth<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>GH acts both directly and by stimulating <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-truth-about-igf-1-top-10-benefits-and-potential-drawbacks\/\">IGF-1<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC303577\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>When released, GH travels from the anterior pituitary gland to the liver and cartilages via the bloodstream and binds to its receptor, growth hormone receptor (GHR), which triggers the production of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/insulin-101\/\">insulin<\/a>-like factor 1 (IGF-1). Both GH and IGF-1 are needed to simulate normal growth [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3262362\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20020365\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>GH acts at the growth plate and increases growth by promoting cell differentiation and expansion. People with acromegaly have large muscles, but their mass doesn\u2019t match their strength due to an uneven composition of the muscles that hinders power output [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2439518\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_May_Increase_Bone_Mass\"><strong>2) May Increase Bone Mass<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>GH plays a key role in bone growth in length and mass during childhood. In a small trial on 7 people, GH deficiency was accompanied by low BMR that could be corrected by supplying the hormone. Together with IGF-1 and GHRH, it increases the sensitivity of the ovaries to gonadotropin stimulation and enhances follicular development [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10453357\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>GH helps in follicular growth and its supplementation is one of the treatments used for ovarian stimulation in assisted reproductive technologies. This hormone also decreased blood vessel resistance, thus increasing blood flow and oxygen supply [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7600659\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"9_May_Regulate_the_Immune_System\"><strong>9) May Regulate the Immune System<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>GH has multiple effects on the immune system. It causes the proliferation of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/how-to-increase-and-decrease-white-blood-cells\/\">white blood cells<\/a> and regulates antibody production by B cells, thymulin secretion by the thymus, and natural killer, engulfment (phagocytosis), and oxidative burst capacity of white blood cells (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/neutrophils\/\">neutrophils<\/a> and macrophages) [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8548046\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/1891468\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, GH deficiency doesn\u2019t seem to affect the immune system drastically. In humans, it\u2019s not associated with immunodeficiency and only minor abnormalities in immune functions have been reported [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16444180\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Negative_Effects\"><strong>Negative Effects<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Acromegaly\"><strong>1) Acromegaly<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The hypersecretion of GH (mostly due to benign tumors in the pituitary gland) results in a condition called acromegaly. Acromegaly is characterized by skeletal deformities (such as jaw overgrowth, skull expansion, and eyebrow bulging), soft tissue swelling (resulting in enlargement of the hands, feet, nose, lips, ears, and some organs), and thick, rough, oily skin [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18226732\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22281905\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Headaches\"><strong>2) Headaches<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Acromegalic patients also suffer from severe <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatment-migraines\/\">headaches<\/a> [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2135020\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, a study on almost 58,000 on GH therapy found <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatment-migraines\/\">headaches<\/a> and dizziness as adverse effects sometimes experienced during the treatment [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18174706\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Vision_Disturbances\"><strong>3) Vision Disturbances<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Blurred vision or complete blindness are occasional symptoms of acromegaly. Its effects counteract those of insulin, leading to high blood sugar levels and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-tips-for-fixing-insulin-resistance\/\">insulin resistance<\/a> [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3053958\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Under pathological conditions of GH excess, it can cause increased glucose production, decreased muscle glucose uptake, and rising blood glucose levels, thus increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/1806481\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"5_Swelling\"><strong>5) Swelling<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a small clinical trial on 8 people treated with GH for short bowel syndrome, swelling of the lower limbs occurred in all patients during the treatment [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10574477\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"6_Muscle_and_Joint_Pain\"><strong>6) Muscle and Joint Pain<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Joint hypermobility syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects the joints and causes <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/23-ways-to-combat-pain-naturally-by-increasing-your-opioids\/\">pain <\/a>and exhaustion. Anecdotally, a man and his wife developed skin cancer while using topical GH as an anti-aging supplement [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23069955\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>So far, however, no studies have found a direct relationship between GH and cancer [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16430706\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Factors_that_Can_Increase_Growth_Hormone_Levels\"><strong>Factors that Can Increase Growth Hormone Levels<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The most important thing is to work with your doctor to determine what underlying condition is causing your low GH levels and establish if you need GH therapy. The additional strategies below are other measures that you may try as an add-on to your treatment regime if you and your doctor determine that they could be appropriate.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Lifestyle\"><strong>Lifestyle<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>1) Exercising<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Exercising is a very potent stimulator of GH secretion. Although it may be less effective at promoting GH secretion, moderate exercise is more beneficial to overall health.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>2) Sleeping<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>GH secretion increases during sleep, especially during the slow-wave stage [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1188300\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Getting a good night\u2019s sleep is always a good idea if you want to achieve optimal health.
