Learn more here.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_are_Baicalin_and_Baicalein\"><a id=\"post-24122-_bnxnfnttrops\"><\/a><strong>What are Baicalin and Baicalein?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Baicalein is a flavone, a type of polyphenolic flavonoid, that is extracted from the roots of <em>Scutellaria baicalensis<\/em> and <em>Scutellaria lateriflora<\/em> that have a wide variety of health benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Baicalin is a flavone glycoside, the glucuronide of baicalein, which is obtained through the binding of glucuronic acid to baicalein. It is primarily used in Asian countries as an herbal supplement.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Potential_Health_Benefits\"><a id=\"post-24122-_fdirh48j7m4x\"><\/a><strong>Potential Health Benefits<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Baicalin and baicalein supplements have not been approved by the FDA for medical use and generally, lack solid clinical research. Regulations set manufacturing standards for them but don&#8217;t guarantee that they&#8217;re safe or effective. Speak with your doctor before supplementing.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Possibly_Effective_For\"><a id=\"post-24122-_jshiuetjjk43\"><\/a>Possibly Effective For<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><a id=\"post-24122-_ctyrr14bzu6a\"><\/a>1) Rheumatoid Arthritis &amp; CAD<\/h4>\n<p>In one study of 374 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and coronary artery disease (which are frequently comorbid), 500 mg of baicalin per day significantly reduced blood lipids and markers of inflammation [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6015450\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Animal_Research_Lacking_Evidence\"><a id=\"post-24122-_i84mnoxiyfse\"><\/a>Animal Research (Lacking Evidence)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>No clinical evidence supports the use of baicalin for any of the conditions listed in this section. Below is a summary of the existing animal and cell-based research, which should guide further investigational efforts. It also decreased liver cell apoptosis (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26936686\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-24122-_dpvvuzoq4pv0\"><\/a>5) Lung Function<\/h4>\n<p>Pure baicalin improved lung function in rats suffering from allergic diseases (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24447164\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>When administered to rats suffering from asthma as a pretreatment, baicalin stimulated a healthy remodeling of the airway (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26884970\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Baicalein reduced lung inflammation by inhibiting <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th1-dominant\/\">Th1<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/th17\/\">7<\/a> cells in the lungs (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26605988\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-24122-_4zlymf114t65\"><\/a>6) Eyes<\/h4>\n<p>Daily intake of baicalin or baicalein helped prevent eye diseases such as cataracts or age-related macular degeneration in animals (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25280175\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Baicalin is found in traditional Japanese herbal medicines for eye health (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22928823\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-24122-_rlev12nxtdgb\"><\/a>7) Fertility<\/h4>\n<p>In animals, baicalin significantly enhanced endometrial reproduction (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25896022\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In mouse embryos, it increased the development and quality of blastocysts (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27478062\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Cancer_Research\"><a id=\"post-24122-_a5dctuwi5k6e\"><\/a><strong>Cancer Research<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Baicalin and baicalein are currently under investigation in the following types of cancers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ovarian cancer [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27414207\">R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Breast cancer [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27143851\">R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Colorectal cancer [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26398706\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24026776\">R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These experiments are currently limited to cell studies, however; such studies are often irrelevant for animal or human trials.<\/p>\n<p>Baicalin ingested at a dose of 100 mg\/kg for 28 days decreases tumor growth and replication in mice with colon cancer cells (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23157964\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>When taken orally in rats for 7 days it increases the activity of T helper cells and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/treg\/\">T regulatory<\/a> cells to fight chemically-induced colon cancer (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25269538\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Limitations\"><a id=\"post-24122-_c13ia0jzgp5s\"><\/a><strong>Limitations<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There are a variety of limitations that should be kept in mind when reading this research.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Almost all of the studies conducted with baicalin are in animals, and it&#8217;s not clear if any of these benefits would occur in humans.<\/li>\n<li>Flavonoids usually have poor bioavailability, and baicalin is no exception (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5079443\/\">R<\/a>). It&#8217;s unclear if any of these benefits would be seen in humans given the bioavailability issues. When given to animals, it&#8217;s often injected, which bypasses the bioavailability problem that humans would have.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span id=\"Dosage\"><a id=\"post-24122-_u1g8oxgayqha\"><\/a><strong>Dosage<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There is no safe and effective dose of baicalin or baicalein because no sufficiently powered study has been conducted to find one.<\/p>\n<p>Baicalein and baicalin supplements can be taken by healthy individuals.
