It prevented the oxidation of LDL (&#8220;bad cholesterol&#8221;) in the blood vessels. It also inhibited blood clotting in many cell-based studies [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21095090\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21596108\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22473647\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18231940\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6356405\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">The best evidence for grape seed benefits comes from studies on deep vein thrombosis and other circulatory conditions. There is good evidence that consuming grape seed is beneficial for cardiovascular health.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"Likely_Ineffective_For\">Likely Ineffective For:<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span id=\"2_High_Blood_Lipids\">2) High Blood Lipids<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a meta-analysis of nine clinical trials with 390 participants, grape seed extract had no effect on blood lipid levels and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/c-reactive-protein\/\">C-reactive protein<\/a> (CRP), a marker of inflammation [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21802563\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Purported_Grape_Seed_Extract_Benefits_with_Insufficient_Evidence\">Purported Grape Seed Extract Benefits with Insufficient Evidence<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>The following purported benefits are only supported by limited, low-quality clinical studies. There is insufficient evidence to support the use of grapeseed for any of the below-listed uses.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Cognitive_Decline\">3) Cognitive Decline<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In over 100 older patients, supplementation with grape seed extract enhanced cognition and reduced the symptoms of stress and depression [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5671585\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In animal and cell studies, these extracts protected brain cells against oxidative damage and death triggered by different toxins [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11292363\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5990600\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9559333\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4>Alzheimer\u2019s Disease<\/h4>\n<p>The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health supports preliminary research on grape seed extract for Alzheimer\u2019s disease [<a href=\"https:\/\/nccih.nih.gov\/health\/grapeseed\/ataglance.htm\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The culprit of Alzheimer\u2019s disease is age-related cognitive decline caused by protein mutations and free-radical damage in the brain [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2685260\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Polyphenols from grapes and blueberries (600 mg daily for 6 months) relieved cognitive decline and memory loss in 215 older patients. This potent antioxidant mixture showed the same results in mice [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/30032176\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5971226\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Still, the above findings might not translate to pure grape seed extract.<\/p>\n<p>In animal models, grape seed extract lowered the risk of Alzheimer\u2019s disease by [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2583320\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2806059\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21871550\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29174497\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reducing free-radical damage in the <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/can-regrow-brain\/#The_Hippocampus\">hippocampus<\/a> (the brain\u2019s memory hub)<\/li>\n<li>Raising the levels of antioxidants<\/li>\n<li>Preventing protein mutations<\/li>\n<li>Boosting the animals\u2019 cognition and memory<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Some evidence suggests that grape seed extract may mitigate age-related cognitive decline, but clinical studies have been limited so far.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Wound_Healing\">4) Wound Healing<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In 40 patients recovering from a surgery, grape seed extract 2% cream enhanced wound healing by stimulating <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/need-know-vegf-good-bad\/\">VEGF<\/a> production, blocking oxidative damage, and fighting microbes [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4802053\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>It showed the same effect in two animal studies [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21816000\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12374620\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Grape seed extract ointment (5%) significantly improved wound healing after C-section in a trial of 129 women [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/31003677\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">In a few clinical studies, creams and ointments containing grape seed extract appeared to improve wound healing.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"5_Liver_Protection\">5) Liver Protection<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In 15 patients with fatty liver, grape seed extract dropped liver enzymes and reversed fat buildup. It showed better results than vitamin C.
