It decreased the levels of an oxidant (malondialdehyde) while increasing several antioxidant enzymes (<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-brain-fog-gene-rs4880-or-sod2\/\">superoxide dismutase<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/30-scientifically-proven-health-benefits-glutathione\/\">glutathione<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/gpx1\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\"> peroxidase<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/gst\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">glutathione S-transferase<\/a>) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25271985\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The extracts of reishi and other mushrooms showed anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity in cells. Among them, reishi was the most effective at inhibiting nitric oxide production in response to bacterial carbohydrates (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/lipopolysaccharides\/\">LPS<\/a>) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25271860\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19939212\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Anxiety_Depression_and_Fatigue\"><b>3) Anxiety, Depression, and Fatigue<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Forty-eight breast cancer patients reported <b>reduced anxiety and depression<\/b>, as well as increased quality of life, when they received reishi spores along with their cancer treatment [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22203880\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a clinical trial on 132 people with neurasthenia, complex carbohydrates isolated from reishi mushroom improved fatigue and other symptoms and were well tolerated [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15857210\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Allergies\"><b>4) Allergies<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A commercial herbal formula with reishi mushroom and two herbs used in Chinese medicine (Chinese <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/licorice\/\">licorice<\/a> and <i>Sophora flavescens<\/i>) improved lung function (although less than <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/prednisone\/\">prednisone<\/a>) in a clinical trial on 91 asthmatic people and a study in mice. The complex was well tolerated and caused no adverse effects in another trial on 20 people [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16159618\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/scholar_lookup?journal=J+Allergy+Clin+Immunol&amp;title=Prophylactic+effects+of+the+Chinese+herbal+formula,+ASHMI,+in+a+murine+model+of+late+onset+atopic+asthma+[abstr]&amp;author=PJ+Busse&amp;author=T+Zhang&amp;author=K+Srivastava&amp;volume=119&amp;publication_year=2007&amp;pages=S247&amp;\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2830609\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Studies revealed that compounds found in reishi effectively inhibit the release of <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/histamine\/\">histamine<\/a> from mast cells, which may explain its benefits for asthma [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2455976\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2455975\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2412714\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"5_Cancer\"><b>5) Cancer <\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Below, we will discuss some preliminary research on the anticancer potential of reishi mushroom. Although the results are promising, further clinical trials are needed before establishing if this fungus and its compounds are useful in cancer therapy.<\/p>\n<p><b>Do not under any circumstances attempt to replace conventional cancer therapies with reishi mushroom or any other supplements<\/b>. If you want to use it as a supportive measure, talk to your doctor to avoid any unexpected interactions.<\/p>\n<p>In a clinical trial on over 200 people with colorectal cancer, treatment with reishi mushroom extract reduced the number and size of tumors [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20518254\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>As previously mentioned, both reishi extract and a complex carbohydrate isolated from this mushroom enhanced immune responses in 2 trials on 75 people with advanced colorectal cancer, possibly helping them fight the disease [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12916709\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16428086\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, a complex with citronellol and the extracts of reishi mushroom, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/dong-quai\/\">dong quai<\/a>, and dang shen (<i>Codonopsis<\/i> <i>pilosula<\/i>) increased immune cells in another trial on 105 cancer patients receiving chemo or radiotherapy [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19145638\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A genistein-rich extract obtained by culturing reishi mushroom with soybean extract didn\u2019t reduce the blood levels of a prostate cancer marker (PSA) by over 50% in 52 men with a history of this disease, but 8 out of the 13 men in the active surveillance group had either no rise or a slight decline of this marker after the treatment. This extract prevented the formation of new blood vessels in colorectal cancer tumors in mice [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/14972467\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12596858\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Reishi spore powder decreased fatigue, anxiety, depression, and immune markers while improving the subjective well-being of 48 women with breast cancer [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3236089\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Treatment with reishi for 13 weeks reduced tumor growth and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-effective-ways-to-lose-weight\/\">weight<\/a> by roughly 50% in mice with breast cancer. Cell studies showed it inhibited the cancer-promoting <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/mtor-natural-mtor-inhibitors\/\">mTOR<\/a> pathway [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3585368\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a cell-based study, the blood collected from patients with lung cancer suppressed the proliferation and activity of immune cells (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/lymphocytes\/\">lymphocytes<\/a>). The same mixture sped up symptom relief in a small trial on 15 people with <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/12-reasons-embrace-cold\/\">cold<\/a> sores or genital herpes [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16173526\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18047445\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In two clinical trials on 138 men with urinary tract infections, reishi mushroom extract improved the symptoms and was well tolerated [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18097505\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18097503\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Reishi mushroom extract improved malaria and prevented the resulting liver damage in infected mice [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23510214\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The mushroom also inhibited the growth of several fungal pathogens and enhanced the antibacterial effects of antibiotics against infectious microbes in test tubes [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25954966\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23510217\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"7_Preventing_Heart_Disease\"><b>7) Preventing Heart Disease<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>An active compound isolated from reishi mushroom (beta-D-glucan) reduced the risk of narrowed arteries (atherosclerosis) in 71 people with chest pain by acting as an antioxidant [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6204443\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Reishi extract also reduced damage to the cells that line blood vessels in a small trial on 14 people with kidney damage, thus reducing the risk of heart attacks [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15567896\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a clinical trial on 26 people with diabetes, reishi helped <b>reduce both blood <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cholesterol\/\"><b>cholesterol<\/b><\/a><b> and<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/insulin-101\/\"><b>insulin<\/b><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-tips-for-fixing-insulin-resistance\/\"><b> resistance<\/b><\/a>. However, a similar trial on 84 people found reishi ineffective to reduce cardiovascular risk factors in diabetics [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21801467\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4980683\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A protein-rich extract of this mushroom <b>lowered blood pressure,<\/b> with the effects lasting up to 8 hours, in hypertensive rats [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25178067\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"8_Liver_and_Kidney_Support\"><b>8) Liver and Kidney Support<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a small trial on 14 people with proteinuria, a sign of kidney disease, reishi resolved this condition and restored the balance of their immune system [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15567896\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a clinical trial on 42 healthy people, reishi extracts enriched in triterpenoids and carbohydrates reduced oxidative damage to the liver and even reversed mild fatty liver condition [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6130508\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Reishi protected against liver damage caused by moderate daily alcohol consumption in rats [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26058418\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In malaria-infected animals, Reishi protected against liver damage while also potently suppressing the malaria infection [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23510214\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"9_Chronic_Pain\"><b>9) Chronic Pain<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a clinical trial on 32 people with rheumatoid arthritis, a supplement with reishi mushroom and an herbal mix used in traditional Chinese medicine (San Miao San) was well tolerated and slightly reduced pain. However, no antioxidant or anti-inflammatory effects could be proven [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17907228\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Although the study didn\u2019t evaluate pain reduction, reishi mushroom taken for 6 weeks improved physical fitness in a clinical trial on 64 women suffering from fibromyalgia [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26545669\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Possibly_Ineffective_for\"><b>Possibly Ineffective for:<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span id=\"Brain_Function\"><b>Brain Function<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Reishi improved brain function of alcohol-consuming rats, both by increasing the energy supply to the brain and decreasing the levels of inhibitory neurotransmitters [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26058418\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, spore powder of reishi mushroom was ineffective at improving any symptoms in a pilot study on 42 people with Alzheimer\u2019s disease [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5959386\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, a commercial supplement with reishi and another mushroom used in traditional Chinese medicine (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/introduction-to-cordyceps\/\"><i>Cordyceps<\/i><\/a> <i>sinensis<\/i>, or caterpillar mushroom) had no cognitive enhancement effects after 30 days in a clinical trial on 96 healthy people [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29199566\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Taken together, the evidence suggests that reishi mushroom is ineffective at improving brain function, both in healthy people and those with Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Side_Effects\"><b>Side Effects<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Keep in mind that the safety profile of reishi mushroom is relatively unknown, given the scarcity of well-designed clinical studies.
