Extracts from these plants have long been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for enhancing libido and male sexual function [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3551978\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Due to its widespread distribution and movement in the body including the brain, icariin exhibits several potential biological activities such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, neuroprotection, anti-tumor activity, as well as promoting overall health in the heart, bones, and a variety of other organs [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.alliedacademies.org\/articles\/antifatigue-properties-of-icariin-from-epimedium-brevicornum.pdf\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/ijnp.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/17\/6\/871#ref-24\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Health_Benefits_of_Icariin\"><b>Health Benefits of Icariin<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"Insufficient_Evidence_for\"><b>Insufficient Evidence for:<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Bone_Growth_and_Repair\"><b>1) Bone Growth and Repair<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Icariin increased hip and lower spine bone density in a clinical trial on 100 postmenopausal women by inhibiting a bone breakdown-marker (deoxypyridinoline) and maintaining a bone-formation one (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/osteocalcin\/\">osteocalcin<\/a>) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17419678\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, icariin improved bone mineral density and strength in female rats with removed ovaries [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16543677\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2829219\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19269147\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Icariin may also promote the production and activity of bone cells (osteoblast) based on the results of cell-based studies [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19501202\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17355822\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18295595\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Icariin stimulated the generation of cultured human bone (osteoblast) cells by increasing bone morphogenetic protein (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/BMP2\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">BMP-2<\/a>) production, a key protein involved in bone and cartilage formation [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17355822\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>It also enhanced the production of primary osteoblasts (by increasing bone formation markers <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/alkaline-phosphatase\/\">ALP<\/a>, osteocalcin, COL-1 and OPG and decreasing RANKL, a protein involved in osteoclast formation) [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17764702\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Icariin inhibited the formation and bone-resorbing action of osteoclasts by increasing OPG\/RANKL ratios in bone cells [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/ecam\/2013\/652317\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is known to inhibit RANKL activity, which plays a role in osteoclast formation and bone destruction [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1924516\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In addition, icariin may suppress osteoclast formation by decreasing superoxides, reactive oxygen species that are required for osteoclast survival and activity [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17764702\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Icariin may also inhibit cartilage and bone breakdown in arthritic mice (by inhibiting cathepsin K, an enzyme that breaks down cartilage and bone) [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23746958\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Although promising, the evidence to back the use of icariin supplementation to promote bone repair is based on a single clinical trial and a few animal and cell-based studies. Larger, more robust clinical trials are required.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Lowering_Stress_Improving_Mood\"><b>2) Lowering Stress &amp; Improving Mood<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a small trial on 10 people with bipolar disorders and alcohol abuse, icariin (up to 300 mg\/day) reduced depressive symptoms and alcohol consumption [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26809351\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis plays a role in mitigating physiological responses to<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/stress-bad-uncovering-hidden-effects-stress\/\"> stress<\/a>, with hyperactivity implicated in depressive and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-anxiety\/\">anxiety<\/a> disorders [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC181180\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Icariin normalizesd <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/reasons-cortisol-low-high\/\">HPA axis<\/a> activity (by reducing <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/why-your-health-problems-worsen-after-stress-the-role-of-crh\/\">CRF<\/a> and cytokines <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interleukin-6\/\">IL-6<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-lifestyle-factors-influence-tnf-interleukin-6-il-6\/\"> TNF-alpha<\/a>) in CMS (chronic mild stress) rat models [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17142971\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17509675\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Cytokines<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interleukin-6\/\"> IL-6<\/a> and TNF-alpha activate<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/why-your-health-problems-worsen-after-stress-the-role-of-crh\/\"> CRF<\/a>, which increases<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/reasons-cortisol-low-high\/\"> HPA axis<\/a> activity characterized by high levels of<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/need-know-cortisol-health-effects\/\"> cortisol<\/a>, a stress hormone [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17142971\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Thus, icariin may act as an antidepressant by decreasing<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/reasons-cortisol-low-high\/\"> HPA axis<\/a> hyperactivity through inhibition of<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/why-your-health-problems-worsen-after-stress-the-role-of-crh\/\"> CRF<\/a> and cytokine levels in depressive patients [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC181180\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A small clinical trial and a few animal and cell studies cannot be considered sufficient evidence that icariin lowers stress and improves mood. Further clinical research is needed.<\/p>\n<p><b>3) Premature Ejaculation<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In a clinical trial on 80 men with a lifelong history of premature ejaculation, PDE5 inhibitors delayed ejaculation from vibratory stimulation. This is in part due to increased <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-brain-fog-gene-rs4880-or-sod2\/\">superoxide dismutase<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-brain-fog-gene-rs4880-or-sod2\/\">SOD<\/a>), an enzyme that reduces oxidative damage [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17600559\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In rats with brain inflammation, short-term icariin treatment improved spatial learning and memory abilities. Found widely in the brain,<a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/cart\"> CART<\/a> functions in preventing energy loss and preserving mitochondrial function [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19858766\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17634068\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/mitochondria\/\">Mitochondria<\/a> are known to play a key role in increasing energy production for brain cell survival during a stroke [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20381504\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Icariin also promoted brain cell survival during a stroke by increasing Sirtuin 1 (<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/nad-and-sirt1-their-role-in-chronic-health-issues\/\">SIRT1<\/a>), an enzyme that promotes cellular <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/63-factors-raising-stress-cortisol-level-backed-science\/\">stress<\/a> resistance, in animal studies [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20381504\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19303870\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/nad-and-sirt1-their-role-in-chronic-health-issues\/\">SIRT<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/nad-and-sirt1-their-role-in-chronic-health-issues\/\">1<\/a> activates the<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/about-pgc-1alpha-and-natural-ways-to-increase-it\/\"> PGC-1alpha<\/a> pathway, which is known to promote mitochondrial biogenesis and energy metabolism [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20381504\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Also,<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/nad-and-sirt1-their-role-in-chronic-health-issues\/\"> SIRT1<\/a> can reduce <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\">oxidative stress<\/a>, a key factor involved in protein and DNA damage in the cell [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20533910\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Icariin stimulated neurogenesis by activating dormant neural stem cells in animal studies [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26079110\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22687254\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Heart_Health\"><b>Heart Health<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Icariin exhibited heart protective effects in many animal studies [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25847837\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21401606\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22779187\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>It improved heart function and reduced tissue death in rats with an acute heart attack by activating the <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/PIK3CA\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">PI3K<\/a>-Akt pathway, which plays a critical role in cell survival [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25847837\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Icariin also prevented heart muscle cell death during reoxygenation following an acute heart attack by increasing Bc1-2 (an anti-cell death factor) and decreasing <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/bax\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">Bax<\/a> ( a pro-cell death factor). These effects are in part due to activation of the PI3K\/Akt pathway, which increases Bc1-2 in heart muscle cells [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25663532\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In another study, icariin inhibited heart muscle cell death by suppressing matrix metalloproteinase (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/mmp9\/\">MMP<\/a>) activity in rats with heart failure. MMPs are enzymes involved in heart remodeling after injury [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21401606\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Icariin also improved heart function by reducing oxidative damage in the mitochondria of diabetic rat hearts. Icariin may improve blood flow to the heart by widening heart vessels via inhibition of Ca2+ channels, which helps reduce the risk of heart stroke and tissue death [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22779187\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/enhanced\/doi\/10.1002\/stem.2005\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Artery hardening (atherosclerosis) is a common cause of stroke and heart attack. Icariin may reduce the risk of hardening of the arteries by lowering <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cholesterol\/\">cholesterol<\/a> levels in the blood, as seen in a study in rabbits [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23700112\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Multiple studies show that icariin can promote new heart muscle cell formation by inducing cell death, increasing reactive oxygen species generation, and activating the <a href=\"http:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/map3k3\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">P38 MAPK<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/nuclear-factor-kappa-b\/\">NF-kappaB<\/a> pathways in mouse embryonic stem cells. This suggests that icariin may have a potential application in heart tissue engineering [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15780198\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18484897\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18423597\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Inflammation_Immunity\"><b>Inflammation &amp; Immunity<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Icariin reduced intestinal inflammation and improved disease symptoms in mice with irritable bowel syndrome (by inhibition of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/stat1\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">STAT1<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-stat3-inhibitors\/\">STAT3<\/a> phosphorylation which is responsible for activating and increasing <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th1-dominant\/\">Th1<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/th17\/\">Th17<\/a> T-cells and pro-inflammatory cytokines) [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23261528\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, it improved airway inflammation in asthmatic rats (by adjusting the <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th1-dominant\/\">Th1<\/a>\/<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th2-dominant\/\">Th2<\/a> cytokine imbalance in the lung tissue). Icariin also inhibited the activation of the NF-\u03baB pathway in lung tissue, which is involved in inflammation [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22040500\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Another study showed that icariin decreased lung inflammation (by inhibiting pro-inflammatory markers <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-lifestyle-factors-influence-tnf-interleukin-6-il-6\/\">TNF-\u03b1<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interleukin-6\/\">IL-6<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cox2-natural-cox2-inhibitors\/\">COX<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/cox2\/\">-2<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/nos2\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">iNOS<\/a> in the lung via activation of the PI3K\/Akt pathway and inhibition of NF-\u03baB) [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20519138\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/causes-symptoms-diagnosis-risk-factors-of-multiple-sclerosis\/\">Multiple sclerosis<\/a> (MS) is an autoimmune disease in which T-cells attack them in the brain nervous system (CNS), causing axon damage and disability. Icariin improved disease symptoms in mice with induced MS (by suppressing the production of T cells and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th1-dominant\/\"> Th1<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/th17\/\"> Th17<\/a> cells) [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25528476\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Icariin increased the production of toll-like receptor 9 (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/tlr9\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">TLR9<\/a>) in mouse macrophages. <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/tlr9\">TLR9<\/a> is a protein that functions in pathogen recognition and activation of the innate immune response [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21538629\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Fatigue\"><b>Fatigue<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Icariin reduced physical fatigue and increased endurance in mice during a weight loaded swimming test. In this study, icariin increased blood <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/glucose\/\">glucose<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/hemoglobin-good-bad-lab-tests-normal-values-reference-ranges\/\">hemoglobin<\/a> and glycogen levels, all of which are known to improve speed, endurance, and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-14-proven-health-benefits-exercise-references-mechanisms\/\">exercise<\/a> ability.<\/p>\n<p>Icariin also decreased blood lactic acid (BLA) and blood<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/causes-of-high-or-low-blood-urea-nitrogen-bun\/\"> urea<\/a> nitrogen (<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/causes-of-high-or-low-blood-urea-nitrogen-bun\/\">BUN<\/a>) levels, indicating that this compound might reduce protein breakdown to produce energy and delay the buildup of lactic acid, both factors known to prevent fatigue [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.alliedacademies.org\/articles\/antifatigue-properties-of-icariin-from-epimedium-brevicornum.pdf\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Regrowing_Blood_Vessels\"><b>Regrowing Blood Vessels<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>New blood vessel formation improves stroke-related tissue injuries and wound healing by increasing oxygen and nutrients to the affected area [<a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/enhanced\/doi\/10.1002\/stem.2005\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Icariin stimulated blood vessel growth (by activating the MEK\/ERK and PI3K\/Akt\/eNOS pathways) in human blood vessel cells. These pathways are associated with the generation, movement and structural shaping of blood vessel cells during blood vessel growth [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18789310\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Jetlag\"><b>Jetlag<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>PDE5 inhibitors enhanced <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/what-it-means-to-keep-to-a-circadian-rhythm\/\">circadian<\/a> responses to light and decreased the amount of time necessary for re-entrainment in mice [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1887561\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>This helps when you fly eastward. Imagine you fly east 3 time zones from California to New York. If you normally go to <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/health-benefits-sleep\/\">sleep<\/a> at 11 PM California time, then you will be going to sleep at 2 AM New York time. This enzyme promotes DNA repair and energy metabolism and inhibits the<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/nuclear-factor-kappa-beta\/\"> NF-kB<\/a> pathway, which is involved in cellular aging, death, and inflammation [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/bmri\/2015\/895976\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Icariin also delayed aging in worms by promoting<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/stress-bad-uncovering-hidden-effects-stress\/\"> stress<\/a> resistance, muscle function and movement, and preventing protein buildup toxicity [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3244416\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Acne\"><b>Acne<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In one study, icariin inhibited <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/44-science-backed-ways-to-inhibit-biofilms-naturally-with-references\/\">biofilm<\/a> formation by <i>Propionibacterium acnes <\/i>in part by killing the bacterial cells. <i>Propionibacterium acnes <\/i>is a bacterium linked to the skin condition of acne, indicating that icariin may be used as a natural anti-acne drug [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22305279\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Note, however, that this result hasn\u2019t been validated in humans or even in animals. Clinical research is needed to confirm this preliminary finding.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Cancer\"><b>Cancer<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Icariin inhibited tumor formation in various types of cancer cells, including breast cancer, leukemia, Burkitt lymphoma, and liver cancer [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4011607\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4033340\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23975599\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In stomach cancer cells, icariin suppressed tumor cell movement and invasion by inhibiting the Rac1-dependent VASP pathway, which is involved in cellular motility [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20307526\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In another study, icariin suppressed the attachment and movement of stomach cancer cells by inactivation of protein kinase A (PKA), an enzyme known to promote cell production and survival [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3161749\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Icariin inhibited gallbladder cancer cell production and induced cell death by suppressing NF-\u03baB activity. The <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/nuclear-factor-kappa-b\/\">NF-kB<\/a> pathway plays a key role in cancer cell survival by increasing anti-cell death factors survivin and Bc1 [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4011607\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Icariin also triggered liver cancer cell death by activating the <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\">ROS<\/a>\/JNK-dependent mitochondrial pathway which plays a key role in initiating cell death [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20674153\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Note, however, that many substances have anti-cancer effects in cells, including downright toxic chemicals like bleach. This doesn\u2019t mean that they have any medical value. On the contrary, most substances (natural or synthetic) that are researched in cancer cells fail to pass further animal studies or clinical trials due to a lack of safety or efficacy.<\/p>\n<h3><span
