Below is a summary of up-to-date animal studies, cell-based research, or low-quality clinical trials which should spark further investigation. However, you shouldn\u2019t interpret them as supportive of any health benefit.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Lung_Health\"><b>3) Lung Health<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Supplements containing Schisandra extract are traditionally used to treat a cough and asthma.<\/p>\n<p>In 60 pneumonia patients, a product containing rhodiola, schisandra, and Siberian ginseng (ADAPT-232) reduced the duration of antibiotic treatment and improved quality of life, compared to standard treatment alone [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16323290\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><b>Further studies should examine the potential benefits of Schisandra for lung function.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Physical_Performance\"><b>4) Physical Performance<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Schisandra may increase nitric oxide levels in athletes, potentially improving their performance [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10228607\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In rats and mice, Schisandra improved exercise performance and endurance by helping the animals adapt to stress (adaptogen) [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19323371\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19188053\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"5_Heart_Health\"><b>5) Heart Health<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Schisandra increased blood flow and nitric oxide availability in two smaller clinical trials, which might protect the heart and blood vessels in theory [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18317575\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10228607\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><b>However, no clinical studies have investigated the effects of Schisandra on heart health.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Sheng-Mai-San, a supplement containing Schisandra fruit extract, is used to treat heart disease in Chinese traditional medicine [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18162350\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In experiments on rat heart, schisandrin B was able to protect heart tissue and prevent heart damage [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/14757976\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Animal_and_Cellular_Research_Lacking_Evidence\">Animal and Cellular Research (Lacking Evidence)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><i>No clinical evidence supports the use of schisandra for any of the conditions listed in this section. Below is a summary of the existing animal and cell-based studies. The list of side effects below is not a definite one, and you should consult your doctor about other potential side effects, based on your health condition and possible drug or supplement interactions.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Schisandra is possibly safe when taken short-term in appropriate amounts.
