Several human studies observed increased blood flow in the heart muscle after insulin administration [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/900041\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11934683\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11916935\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Insulin increased the production and secretion of a growth factor known to create new blood vessels (<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/need-know-vegf-good-bad\/\">VEGF<\/a>) in a cell-based study [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15473891\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>This hormone also inhibited platelet formation via an increase of a specific compound (cGMP), possibly reducing the risk of blood clots [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7518780\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Although a bit limited, the evidence suggests that insulin may help improve pumping function and blood flow. You may discuss with your doctor if it may help you prevent or improve heart condition. More clinical trials are needed to shed some light on the potential of insulin to increase muscle building.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Improving_Protein_Digestion\"><a id=\"post-16948-_h9pavg9ggy50\"><\/a><strong>2) Improving Protein Digestion<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In an old trial, insulin administration increased the secretion of stomach acids. This effect couldn\u2019t be replicated in another trial on 9 healthy people, but insulin improved the secretion of the digestive enzyme pepsin [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/1123136\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2472262\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Two old, small clinical trials are clearly insufficient to support this potential benefit. Larger, more robust studies are needed to shed some light on this aspect of insulin.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Animal_and_Cell_Research_Lack_of_Evidence\"><a id=\"post-16948-_4q3tsef1hh82\"><\/a><strong>Animal and Cell Research (Lack of Evidence)<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>No clinical evidence supports the use of insulin for any of the conditions listed in this section. Below is a summary of the existing animal and cell-based research, which should guide further investigational efforts. However, the studies should not be interpreted as supportive of any health benefit.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Bone_Health\"><a id=\"post-16948-_njn2qnily9ug\"><\/a><strong>Bone Health<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Insulin increased the activity of bone-forming cells (osteoblasts) in test tubes [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2910411\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Negative_Effects_of_Insulin\"><a id=\"post-16948-_ju77hygp9xof\"><\/a><strong>Negative Effects of Insulin<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The conditions we discuss here are commonly associated with high insulin levels. Note, however, that the majority of studies covered in this section deal with associations only, which means that a cause-and-effect relationship hasn\u2019t been established. Because obesity and cancer are complex conditions, other genetic and environmental factors also contribute to their development.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Body_Weight\"><a id=\"post-16948-_6q472psvnja0\"><\/a><strong>1) Body Weight<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Insulin has mixed effects with regard to weight <\/strong>&#8211;<strong> it reduces appetite<\/strong>,<strong> but can increase fat mass<\/strong>. Insulin is one of the big 4 hormones that determine weight. It forces fat cells to take up blood lipids, converts them to <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/triglycerides\/\">triglycerides<\/a>, and promotes fat storage in fat cells [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21294236\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a study of 22 healthy men, elevated insulin levels were associated with greater amounts of fat around the organs (visceral fat) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2202881\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a small trial on 7 healthy men, insulin infusion decreased blood triglycerides by 22%, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/APOB\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">APOB<\/a> by 32%, and free fatty acids by 85%, meaning it promoted their transport to fat cells [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9261280\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Fat tissue has been shown to release hormones (adipokines) that may play a role in causing insulin resistance [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18093861\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In cell-based studies, insulin stimulates the creation of fat tissue through the utilization of glucose [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/14406973\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Cancer\"><a id=\"post-16948-_1qoo3eafom6r\"><\/a><strong>2) Cancer<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>High fasting glucose and insulin levels, as well as the presence of insulin resistance, were associated with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer in a study on over 29,000 Finish men [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16352795\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, insulin resistance and high fasting insulin were associated with thyroid and endometrial cancer in 2 meta-analyses [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/30081182\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26597445\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>High blood insulin levels have also been associated with an increased incidence of colon cancer in multiple studies [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7749056\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26169471\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Insulin therapy has been associated with an increased risk of cancer, especially colorectal, pancreatic, and liver cancer, in diabetics [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22528451\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29064852\">R<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Insulin increases the levels of a related hormone (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-truth-about-igf-1-top-10-benefits-and-potential-drawbacks\/\">IGF-1<\/a>). A study on over 400 people associated high levels of this hormone with lung cancer. In contrast, its levels are lower in women with ovarian cancer [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9923856\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27823741\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Factors_That_Modify_Insulin_Levels\"><a id=\"post-16948-_r85f1ryi4lj2\"><\/a><strong>Factors That Modify Insulin Levels<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Dietary fiber is associated with lower levels of fasting insulin [R].<\/p>\n<p>Foods with high glycemic index cause a faster and greater insulin (and glucose) spike after their digestion.
