It\u2019s important to talk to your doctor before taking ashwagandha for any reason.<\/p>\n<p>Ashwagandha is traditionally used as a tonic to calm the nerves. In two studies of 116 chronically-stressed people, the root extract improved stress, well-being, and happiness; it also reduced <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/need-know-cortisol-health-effects\/\">cortisol<\/a> levels [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3252722\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5871210\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3573577\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a study of 39 people, ashwagandha extract was slightly effective for people with <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-anxiety\/\">anxiety<\/a>. Although these results are promising, the effectiveness of ashwagandha in people with anxiety remains to be determined in larger, better-designed trials [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2958355\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In several animal studies, Ashwagandha was helpful against anxiety and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-depression\/\"> depression<\/a> and for improving stress tolerance [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11194174\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18476388\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12895672\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10075127\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3252722\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Ashwagandha is best known for combating stress, which is supported by decent studies. Its purported ability to relieve anxiety is insufficiently researched.<\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span id=\"Ashwagahda_Benefits_with_Insufficient_Evidence\">Ashwagahda Benefits with Insufficient Evidence<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The following purported benefits are only supported by limited, low-quality clinical studies. There is insufficient evidence to support the use of ashwagandha for any of the below-listed uses. Remember to speak with a doctor before taking ashwagandha, and never use it in place of something your doctor recommends or prescribes.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Memory\">2) Memory<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Ashwagandha root extract<b> improved memory in 50 people with mild cognitive impairment<\/b>. The extract also improved working memory in another study of 53 people [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28471731\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24330893\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In rats, Ashwagandha protected against memory impairment due to<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ptsd-causes-treatments\/\"> PTSD<\/a> and the lack of oxygen (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/why-you-may-be-suffering-from-low-oxygen-and-not-realize-it\/\">hypoxia<\/a>) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/31218539\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23211660\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Weight_Loss_Muscle_Growth\">3) Weight Loss &amp; Muscle Growth<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Ashwagandha root extract <b>reduced food cravings<\/b>,<b> eating<\/b>,<b> and body weight<\/b> in a study of 52 people [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5871210\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In three studies with over 100 people, ashwagandha extract in combination with resistance training [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4658772\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/30463324\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3487234\/\"> R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduced body fat<\/li>\n<li>Increased muscle strength<\/li>\n<li>Boosted testosterone<\/li>\n<li>Reduced body fat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Endurance\">4) Endurance<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a trial of 49 healthy athletic adults, Ashwagandha extract <b>improved endurance<\/b> and self-reported physical health after 12 weeks [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26730141\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>It had the same effect on 40 elite cyclists after 8 weeks of supplementation [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23326093\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"5_Diabetes\">5) Diabetes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a small trial of 12 people, Ashwagandha decreased blood sugar levels as effectively as diabetes medication, without significant adverse side effects [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11116534\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Ashwagandha also reduced blood sugar in several animal studies. In some of these studies,<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/hba1c-what-is-it-and-why-is-it-important\/\"> HbA1c<\/a> (a measure of long-term blood sugar) and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/insulin-101\/\"> insulin<\/a> levels improved as well [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20186490\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18346053\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/app\/uploads\/2017\/12\/17.pdf\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1742-7843.2008.00223.x\/full\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In other animal studies, Ashwagandha reduced the severity of complications from diabetes, such as testicular dysfunction, cataracts, and nerve pain. Supplementation also improved antioxidant status; this is helpful because excess<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/glucose\/\"> glucose<\/a> creates<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\"> oxidative stress<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24488064\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23285670\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/omcl\/2015\/875961\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12686449\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Ashwagandha has helped with diabetes by reducing blood sugar and insulin levels and enhancing antioxidant defense, but more research is required to determine whether it\u2019s effective for this purpose.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"6_Heart_Health\">6) Heart Health<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Ashwagandha is believed to reduce blood pressure and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cholesterol\/\"> cholesterol<\/a> and prevent atherosclerosis, thus improving heart health, but clinical evidence is limited. In one human trial, adding ashwagandha to conventional anti-ischemic drugs improved outcomes compared to the conventional treatment alone [<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/app\/uploads\/2017\/12\/17.pdf\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.krepublishers.com\/02-Journals\/S-EM\/EM-06-0-000-12-Web\/EM-06-2-000-12-Abst-PDF\/S-EM-06-2-111-12-203-Kushwaha-S\/S-EM-06-2-111-12-203-Kushwaha-S-Tt.pdf\"> R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21170205\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In animal studies, Ashwagandha reduced the risk of stroke and heart attacks. It also decreased triglyceride levels and protected against oxidative damage due to chemotherapy [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16713218\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26539517\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26718711\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"7_Infections\">7) Infections<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4>Antibacterial Activity<\/h4>\n<p>In a study of 133 people with tuberculosis, Ashwagandha and other herbals in combination with antibiotics<b> relieved coughing and fever better than antibiotics alone<\/b>. In another study of 99 people with tuberculosis, Ashwagandha improved symptoms, inflammation, and body weight [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3456861\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3487240\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In mouse and cell studies, Ashwagandha has inhibited or killed bacteria such as <i>Salmonella <\/i>and<i> Staphylococcus aureus<\/i> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15830846\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17009292\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3681961\/#pone.0065619-Mishra1\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4>Antiviral Activity<\/h4>\n<p>An herbal remedy containing Ashwagandha sped up <b>recovery from viral hepatitis<\/b> in 29 patients [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3059443\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Ashwagandha has also shown antiviral activity against HIV, herpes, and Infectious Bursal Disease virus in cell-based studies [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5871050\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scielo.org.za\/scielo.php?pid=S0038-23532007000500003&amp;script=sci_arttext&amp;tlng=pt\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25415340\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29340165\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4>Antifungal Activity<\/h4>\n<p>Ashwagandha inhibited the growth of multiple species of fungus (<i>Aspergillus flavus, Fusarium oxysporum, <\/i>and <i>Fusarium verticillioides<\/i>) in a cell study [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17009292\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4>Anti-Parasitic Activity<\/h4>\n<p>Ashwagandha has shown anti-parasitic activity against <i>Leishmania<\/i> and <i>Malaria<\/i> in animal studies [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3521472\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25082945\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17447395\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Cell studies indicate that ashwagandha may help fight bacteria, fungi, and viruses. However, more studies in animals and, eventually, in humans will be required.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"8_Symptoms_of_OCD_ADHD\">8) Symptoms of OCD &amp; ADHD<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4>OCD<\/h4>\n<p>In a study of 30<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-ocd\/\"> people with<\/a> obsessive-compulsive disorder (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-ocd\/\">OCD<\/a>), Ashwagandha extract taken with standard treatment <b>reduced their symptoms more than medication alone<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27515872\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Ashwagandha also effectively treated the symptoms of OCD in mice [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22546655\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4>ADHD<\/h4>\n<p>ADHD is usually treated with psychostimulants, such as Ritalin. However, their long-term safety has been questioned in several studies. A safer alternative would be preferable for many parents [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3489818\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20228219\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>An herbal mix containing Ashwagandha, peony,<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/gotu-kola-2\/\"> Gotu Kola<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/spirulina\/\"> spirulina<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/bacopa-monnieri-4\/\"> bacopa<\/a>, and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/amazing-health-benefits-of-lemon-balm-with-side-effects\/\"> lemon balm<\/a> <b>improved response time<\/b>,<b> impulsivity<\/b>,<b> and<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/improve-focus-attention\/\"> <b>focus<\/b><\/a><b> in a study of 120 children with ADHD<\/b>, with no adverse side effects reported [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20228219\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>No studies have yet investigated the effect of Ashwagandha alone in ADHD.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Ashwagandha may reduce symptoms of OCD and ADHD, but more trials are needed to confirm its effectiveness.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"9_Schizophrenia\">9) Schizophrenia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a pilot trial of 11 people, Ashwagandha <b>reduced the severity of sensory problems<\/b> experienced by schizophrenia patients [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4501403\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5476096\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, it <b>did not help with feelings of isolation or depression<\/b> in another study of 25 schizophrenic patients [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3757622\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"10_Pain\">10) Pain<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Ashwagandha <b>reduced pain<\/b>,<b> stiffness<\/b>,<b> and disability<\/b> in 60 people with knee joint pain. Ayurvedic treatment containing ashwagandha reduced pain, joint tenderness, and swelling in a study of 86 people with rheumatoid arthritis [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25857501\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27647541\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In another study of 42 people, an herbal mixture containing Ashwagandha, Indian frankincense, turmeric, and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/literally-everything-wanted-know-zinc-backed-science\/\"> zinc<\/a> <b>reduced pain from osteoarthritis<\/b>. Ashwagandha also relieved pain in three rodent studies [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/1943180\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28849547\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27383871\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26397759\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"11_Reproductive_Health\">11) Reproductive Health<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4>Women<\/h4>\n<p>Ashwagandha may reduce the complications of menopause. In a trial of 51 menopausal women, ashwagandha reduced symptoms such as<b> hot flashes<\/b>,<b> mood fluctuations<\/b>,<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/health-benefits-sleep\/\"> <b>sleep<\/b><\/a><b> issues<\/b>,<b> irritability<\/b>,<b> and anxiety<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3665193\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In 50 healthy women, Ashwagandha improved self-reported measures of sexual function such as arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and satisfaction [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4609357\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Ashwagandha with <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/tribulus-terrestris\/\"><i>Tribulus terrestris<\/i><\/a> restored hormone balance in rats with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28462131\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4>Men<\/h4>\n<p>In a clinical trial of 150 men, Ashwagandha reduced oxidative stress, <b>increased<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/testosterone-will-add\/\"> <b>testosterone<\/b><\/a>,<b> and<\/b> <b>lowered<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/follicle-stimulating-hormone\/\"> <b>FSH<\/b><\/a>. These hormonal changes encourage the production of new sperm cells. However, more studies will be required to confirm any benefit.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"12_Sleep\">12) Sleep<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The root or whole plant extract has been used as a sleep agent in Ayurveda. A mouse study found that triethylene glycol is the active component of Ashwagandha responsible for sleep induction [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28207892\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Ashwagandha improved sleep quality in 6 out of 18 healthy people. It also improved sleep in rats through activating the<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-ways-to-increase-gaba\/\"> GABA<\/a> pathway [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23125505\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21369449\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Sleep loss is unhealthy and leads to increased levels of reactive oxygen species (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\">ROS<\/a>) and cell death in the brain. Interestingly, Ashwagandha prevented the negative effects of sleep deprivation in rodents, likely through antioxidant mechanisms [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27037574\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17585686\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28004351\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Ashwagandha may help people fall asleep and improve sleep quality. It may also reduce the consequences of sleep deprivation. However, as usual, more studies are required.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"13_Immunity\">13) Immunity<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a small trial of 5 people, Ashwagandha extract improved the immune response by activating<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/how-to-increase-and-decrease-white-blood-cells\/\"> white blood cells<\/a>. In two other trials (a total of 142 people), an herbal mix containing Ashwagandha increased the activity of<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/intro-natural-killer-cells-increase-decrease\/\"> natural killer cells<\/a>, white blood cells specialized to fight tumors and viruses [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19388865\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19504465\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In mice, Ashwagandha extract enhanced immunity by activating bone marrow cells, macrophages, and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/lymphocytes\/\"> lymphocytes<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10904163\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12636106\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>It increased the levels of<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th1-dominant\/\"> Th1<\/a> cytokines and prevented the depletion of white blood cells in stressed mice [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16846833\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16846833\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Finally, in a combined mouse and cell study, Withaferin A inhibited the activity of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs). These dysfunctional immune cells can stimulate tumor growth and prevent the immune system from attacking cancer cells [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23982485\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5192356\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Ashwagandha may stimulate the immune system to fight infections and cancer, but more clinical trials are needed.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"14_Gut_Health\">14) Gut Health<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a single case report, an Ayurvedic medication containing Ashwagandha helped treat constipation, stomach pain, and vomiting [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6033722\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>An<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/enema\/\"> enema<\/a> of Ashwagandha restored the health of the intestinal lining in rats with<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ibd-ulcerative-colitis-crohn-genetics-lifestyle-stress-infections\/\"> IBD<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3103490\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Note, however, that one animal study and a single case study of an herbal blend cannot be considered strong evidence. We need additional studies before making any definitive claims about Ashwagandha&#8217;s effect on the digestive system.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"15_Adrenal_Function\">15) Adrenal Function<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is an inborn dysfunction of enzymes that control hormone production in the adrenal gland. It results in a deficiency of cortisol and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/need-know-aldosterone-health-effects\/\"> aldosterone<\/a> and an excess of male hormones. Symptoms include excess facial hair, acne, hair loss, menstrual irregularity, and infertility.<\/p>\n<p>In two case studies, Ashwagandha <b>improved the symptoms and hormone levels of elderly women with CAH<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4543599\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5496100\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Controlled trials will be needed to confirm this benefit.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Ashwagadha_Uses_Lacking_Evidence\">Ashwagadha Uses Lacking Evidence<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>No clinical evidence supports the use of ashwagandha for any of the conditions listed in this section. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Below is a summary of the existing animal and cell-based research, which should guide further investigational efforts. However, the studies listed below should not be interpreted as supportive of any health benefit.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"16_Oxidative_Stress\">16) Oxidative Stress<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Withanolides, the Ashwagandha active compounds, are potent antioxidants. In a study on human cells, Ashwagandha <b>improved markers of age-related oxidative stress <\/b>(<a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/foxo3a\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">FOXO3A<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/about-sirt3-and-natural-ways-to-increase-it\/\"> SIRT3<\/a>), suggesting it may prevent premature aging [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28526626\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In rat studies, Ashwagandha boosted the body&#8217;s antioxidants, including<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-brain-fog-gene-rs4880-or-sod2\/\"> superoxide dismutase<\/a> (SOD),<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/catalase-benefits\/\"> catalase<\/a>, and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/30-scientifically-proven-health-benefits-glutathione\/\"> glutathione<\/a>.
