We have written this post for informational purposes only, and its goal is simply to inform our readers about the science behind some potential complementary pain-management strategies, and what we currently know about how they might work.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"The_Brains_Opioid_System_A_Brief_Introduction\">The Brain\u2019s Opioid System: A Brief Introduction<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The brain\u2019s <em>opioid system<\/em> is believed to play a critical role in regulating <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/21-drugs-increase-motivation\/\">motivation<\/a>, emotion, attachment behavior, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-10-ways-to-curb-your-hunger-and-approaches-that-didnt-work\/\">hunger<\/a> and satiety, and how one responds to <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/63-factors-raising-stress-cortisol-level-backed-science\/\">stress<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/pain\/\">pain<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/14622160\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Increasing the brain\u2019s number of these receptors &#8211; or increasing the levels of the various molecules that bind to and activate them &#8211; may produce an opioid response that could reduce pain. What are the basic components of this important brain system?<\/p>\n<p>There are four major opioid receptors in our brain:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Mu-opioid receptors<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Delta-opioid receptors<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Kappa-opioid receptors<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Nociceptin-opioid receptors<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Mu-Opioid Receptors<\/h4>\n<p>Mu-opioid receptor (MOR) activation has been associated with (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%CE%9C-opioid_receptor\">R<\/a>):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>sedation<\/li>\n<li>pain relief<\/li>\n<li>slowed breathing<\/li>\n<li>lowered blood pressure<\/li>\n<li>euphoria<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Morphine is an example of a mu-opioid activator. <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/endorphins\/\">Additionally, endorphins<\/a> (\u201cendogenous morphines\u201d) also activate mu-opioid receptors.<\/p>\n<p>Negative side-effects of elevated mu-opioid receptor activity may include itching, nausea, and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/causes-ibs-general-gut-dysfunction\/\">constipation<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%CE%9C-opioid_receptor\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4>Delta-Opioid Receptors<\/h4>\n<p>Delta-opioid receptor (DOR) activation has been associated with (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%CE%94-opioid_receptor\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24788819\">R<\/a>):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>some pain relief (although less that of mu-opioid receptor activation)<\/li>\n<li>increased levels of <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-natural-ways-to-increase-bdnf\/\">BDNF<\/a> in the brain<\/li>\n<li>possible \u201cantidepressant-like\u201d effects<\/li>\n<li>reduction of inflammation (via inhibition of <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-lifestyle-factors-influence-tnf-interleukin-6-il-6\/\">TNF-\u03b1<\/a>, a <em>pro-inflammatory cytokine<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cannabidiol-cbd\/\"><em>Cannabidiol<\/em><\/a> (CBD) is an example of a delta-opioid activator (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%CE%94-opioid_receptor\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Negative side-effects of delta-opioid receptor activity can include seizures (especially at very high doses) (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%CE%94-opioid_receptor\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4>Kappa-Opioid Receptors<\/h4>\n<p>Kappa-opioid receptor (KOR) activation has been associated with (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%CE%9A-opioid_receptor\">R<\/a>):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>moderate pain relief<\/li>\n<li>sedation<\/li>\n<li>increased appetite<\/li>\n<li>increased urination (<em>diuretic<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Oxycodone<\/em>, <em>morphine<\/em>, and <em>menthol<\/em> (found in <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/peppermint-oil-benefits-uses-side-effects\/\">peppermint oil<\/a>), are examples of kappa-opioid receptor activators (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%CE%9A-opioid_receptor\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Negative side-effects of kappa-opioid receptor activators can include a bad mood (<em>dysphoria<\/em>), and &#8211; in particularly high dosages &#8211; hallucinations (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%CE%9A-opioid_receptor\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4>Nociceptin Opioid Receptors<\/h4>\n<p>Nociceptin-opioid receptor (NOR) activation has been associated with chronic (but not acute) pain relief (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21859931\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>These receptor types are also being studied for their potential use in patients with congestive heart failure and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatment-migraines\/\">migraines<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nociceptin_receptor#Antagonists\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, some drugs that activate the nociceptin opioid receptor are currently being researched for their potential application in pain relief (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24713140\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Negative side-effects of nociceptin-opioid receptor activators can include <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-anxiety\/\">anxiety<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-depression\/\">depression<\/a>, increased appetite, and increased acute pain (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nociceptin\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"16_Potential_Complementary_Strategies_for_Opioid-Based_Pain_Relief\">16 Potential Complementary Strategies for Opioid-Based Pain Relief<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The following lifestyle and dietary\/supplement factors are currently believed to play a role in either stimulating opioid receptor activity, increasing the brain\u2019s levels of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/endorphins\/\"><em>endorphins<\/em><\/a> (activating mu-opioid receptors), or increasing the overall sensitivity of opioid receptors to stimulation. In contrast, light-to-moderate weight training, or mild cardiovascular exercise, don\u2019t appear to have a significant effect on raising endorphin levels (<a href=\"http:\/\/science.howstuffworks.com\/life\/exercise-happiness2.htm\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Natural_Sunlight\">2) Natural Sunlight<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Most of us just feel better when we get some sun &#8211; and there might be good biological reasons behind this.<\/p>\n<p>For example, according to some research, even low amounts of exposure to <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/avoiding-sun-will-kill-14-proven-science-based-health-benefits-sun\/\">UV light<\/a> may help stimulate the production of natural endorphins by the skin (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24949960\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24949966\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>However, there\u2019s no need to overdo it! Just 30 minutes of full-body sun exposure has been reported to contribute to higher endorphin levels, and may even suppress the body\u2019s natural responses to pain &#8211; all without significantly increasing the risk for skin cancer.<\/p>\n<p>People who live in an environment that may be lacking in adequate sunlight may also be able to achieve similar effects by using a UVB light, which may mimic some of the effects of natural sunlight by stimulating the production of <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/35proven-health-benefits-vitamin-d-part-1\/\">vitamin D<\/a> throughout the body.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, UVA light has not been reported to have any significant effect on stimulating endorphin production (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12452872\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Get_a_Massage\">3) Get a Massage<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>According to some preliminary research, massages, stroking, and other forms of intimate physical contact may have general pain-reducing effects. Some researchers believe that these effects may likely be due to the release of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-social-chilled-out-and-empathetic-genes-oxytocin-receptor-snps\/\"><em>oxytocin<\/em><\/a>, a hormone neurotransmitter that is closely associated with the positive effects of socializing and emotional bonding (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12169113\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Although it hasn\u2019t been fully confirmed yet, this mechanism would appear to make sense, as oxytocin has been reported to interact with the brain\u2019s opioid system &#8211; especially through mu- and kappa-opioid receptors (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12169113\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Eating_Enjoyable_Foods\">4) Eating Enjoyable Foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Some preliminary studies have reported that the consumption of palatable food may help stimulate mu-opioid receptors in the <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/basal-ganglia-your-reptilian-brain\/\"><em>basal ganglia<\/em><\/a>, a set of interconnected brain regions that are heavily involved in the brain\u2019s reward system.<\/p>\n<p>According to one early human study, 16 healthy volunteers reported experiencing less pain (induced by extreme cold) after they ate a palatable, high-fat meal (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9226361\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In another study, women (but not men) who consumed a palatable sweet food reported increased pain tolerance compared with those receiving either unpalatable food, \u201cneutral\u201d food, or no food at all (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9035263\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>However, there may be a downside to these potential effects. For example, some researchers have proposed that the widespread availability of highly-palatable foods &#8211; many of which tend to be high in sugar and fat &#8211; is probably one of the most important factors contributing to the increasingly-widespread problems of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/132-biological-mechanisms-for-weight-modulation\/\">obesity<\/a>. Moreover, the \u201crewarding\u201d effects of these foods on the brain\u2019s opioid and reward systems may be responsible for compulsive patterns of over-eating, which can lead to \u201caddiction-like\u201d dependence on food (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19528981\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15987666\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"5_Oxytocin\">5) Oxytocin<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-social-chilled-out-and-empathetic-genes-oxytocin-receptor-snps\/\"><em>Oxytocin<\/em><\/a> (not to be confused with <em>oxycodone<\/em>!) is a neurotransmitter hormone (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/npy\/#What_is_a_Neuropeptide\"><em>neuropeptide<\/em><\/a>) that has long been associated with social and emotional bonding (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oxytocin\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Some people refer to oxytocin as the \u201c<em>love hormone<\/em>\u201d because it is believed to facilitate trust and attachment between individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Although the mechanisms of oxytocin are quite complex, some researchers believe that at least part of its effects may be due to the stimulation of mu- and kappa-opioid receptors throughout the brain &#8211; and that these mechanisms may be responsible for some of its purported pain-killing (<em>analgesic<\/em>) effects (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12169113\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Oxytocin is naturally produced and released by the brain &#8211; however, some early evidence suggests that certain <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/probiotics-good-bacteria\/\">probiotic<\/a> strains, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-12-scientific-health-benefits-of-l-reuteri\/\"><em>L. Reuteri<\/em><\/a>, may partly increase oxytocin levels (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.plosone.org\/article\/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0078898\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"6_Cold_Exposure\">6) Cold Exposure<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>According to some preliminary research, intermittent swimming in cold water may stimulate pain-relief mechanisms that are mediated by our opioid system (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3033575\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Exposure to <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/12-reasons-embrace-cold\/\">cold<\/a> &#8211; such as by taking cold showers or ice baths &#8211; has also been reported to increase levels of the \u201c<em>heat shock inducible factor<\/em>\u201d, a protein that stimulates mu and delta opioid receptors, according to two animal studies in rats (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25108706\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16171784\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Increasing these receptors makes our innate opioids more likely to bind to and activate them. However, keep in mind that long-term or high-dose use of opioids may reduce the number of mu-opioid receptors, which could be counter-productive in the long run (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%CE%9C-opioid_receptor\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"7_Magnesium\">7) Magnesium<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A few preliminary studies in chronic pain patients have reported that <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/21-proven-science-based-reasons-magnesium-amazing-including-drawbacks\/\">magnesium<\/a> may amplify some of the pain-relieving effects of low doses of morphine. Some researchers have suggested that these potential effects could possibly be due to magnesium\u2019s ability to block NMDA receptors (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11873038\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19519724\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"8_Sodium_Butyrate\">8) Sodium Butyrate<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Some early research suggests that certain <em>short-chain fatty acids<\/em>, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/health-benefits-butyrate-derivatives-sodium-butyrate-phenylbutyrate-trybutyrine-butyric-acid-butyrate-prodrugs-butyrate-producing-bacteria\/\"><em>butyrate<\/em><\/a>, may help stimulate mu-opioid receptors. This, in turn, could potentially contribute to a mild pain-relieving effect (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18950606\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Butyrate can be consumed directly, although it can also be formed in the body from some other dietary compounds, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/what-is-resistant-starch-sources-how-to-increase-diet\/\"><em>resistant starch<\/em><\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18950606\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11157351\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"9_Capsaicin\">9) Capsaicin<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/capsaicin\/\"><em>Capsaicin<\/em><\/a>, the \u201cspicy\u201d or \u201chot\u201d compound found in cayenne and chili peppers, has been reported to stimulate the release of endorphins (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Capsaicin\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Although it might seem ironic or counter-intuitive, capsaicin has been reported to reduce (\u201c<em>down-regulate<\/em>\u201d) the number of pain receptors (<em>nociceptors<\/em>), which could potentially translate to reduced pain sensitivity (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3661216\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"10_Probiotics\">10) Probiotics<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Certain strains of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a1probiotics-good-bacteria\/\">probiotic<\/a>\u201d bacteria may have some effect on the opioid system.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the probiotic strain <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/l-acidophilus\/\"><em>L. acidophilus<\/em><\/a> has been reported to increase the expression of certain opioid receptors throughout the gastrointestinal tract, such as mu-opioid and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-lectin-sensitive-gene-cannabanoid-receptor-1-genes-cnr1-rs1049353\/\">cannabinoid<\/a> receptors. Some researchers have theorized that this mechanism may contribute to an anti-pain (<em>analgesic<\/em>) effect, although much more research would be needed to properly confirm this effect (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17159985\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"11_Acupuncture\">11) Acupuncture<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Although acupuncture is highly controversial, some researchers who study it believe that the body\u2019s innate opioid system may play some role in its potential effects. (Note that this could be the case even if acupuncture\u2019s effects are based solely on the \u201cplacebo effect,\u201d as this effect could still involve the opioid system somehow.) They were also reported to show behaviors suggesting a reduction in their overall sensitivity to pain (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3033575\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"14_Be_More_Social\">14) Be More Social<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>According to some preliminary research in animals, the positive rewarding feelings associated with social activity may be due to the stimulation of mu-opioid receptors in the <em>nucleus accumbens<\/em> (a brain region highly involved in reward and motivation) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21525276\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Relatedly, another animal study has reported that mice who experienced close social contact before a surgery were better able to recover from the surgery, compared to mice who were made to live alone (i.e. without adequate social stimulation).
