This post is about leptin resistance. Leptin resistance is common in obesity and it doesn&#8217;t suppress appetite. Scientists are investigating how leptin sensitivity affects weight loss and inflammation&#8211;but can you actually reverse leptin resistance? Read on to learn what the latest research suggests.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_is_Leptin_Resistance\"><a id=\"post-15750-_27oeqh3ydhsv\"><\/a><strong>What is Leptin Resistance?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Obese humans have high levels of leptin, which suggests a strong link between leptin and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/132-biological-mechanisms-for-weight-modulation\/\"> obesity<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8532024\/\">R<\/a>). But is it really all that simple? <br>To rewind, leptin is produced by the body\u2019s fat cells. It has been called the \u201csatiety hormone that causes weight loss,\u201d the \u201cobesity hormone\u201d or \u201cfat hormone,\u201d And lastly, the \u201cstarvation hormone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Initial research hyped leptin\u2019s alleged weight loss effects, but further studies revealed that leptin is not the weight loss pill everyone has been searching for [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12439643\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>On the contrary, leptin levels increase exponentially (more drastically), not linearly, with fat mass. This means that increased body weight may <em>cause <\/em>leptin to go much higher [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/isrn\/2013\/139239\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><em>Leptin resistance<\/em> is when leptin doesn\u2019t work as well to decrease appetite or increase energy expenditure. Tissues and cells seem to become resistant to even high amounts of it&#8211;a similar mechanism to <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-tips-for-fixing-insulin-resistance\/\">insulin resistance<\/a>, but different hormonal pathways are involved [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6354688\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Leptin resistance is now believed to be the leading driver of fat gain in humans (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0026049514002418\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Because fat cells produce leptin in proportion to their size, obese people tend have very high levels of leptin (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8532024\/\">R<\/a>) that doesn\u2019t perform its job properly (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3281561\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Although leptin is thought to suppress appetite when it\u2019s slightly raised,it seems to have the opposite effects when it gets too high. That\u2019s why scientists think leptin resistance leads to increased appetite and decreased energy expenditure [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6354688\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_Are_The_Mechanisms_of_Leptin_Resistance\"><a id=\"post-15750-_nyt6ccy7pu\"><\/a><strong>What Are The Mechanisms of Leptin Resistance?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"Scientific_Theories\"><a id=\"post-15750-_9z6vzu54h8\"><\/a>Scientific Theories<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Many mechanisms have been proposed to explain leptin resistance, including impairment in leptin transportation and leptin \u201csignaling\u201d issues (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4069066\/#R119\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4069066\/#R120\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Limited studies suggest that in obese people with very high leptin, levels in the cerebrospinal fluid only increase slightly (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8684156\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Thus, scientists believe that leptin might not be getting into the brain and this could be a part of the problem. This theory hasn\u2019t been verified yet, though (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8684156\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Animal and cell-based experiments suggest that high blood <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/triglycerides\/\">Triglycerides<\/a> may impair leptin from entering the brain. Human studies are needed to determine if this is true (<a href=\"http:\/\/diabetes.diabetesjournals.org\/content\/53\/5\/1253.full\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0025079\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Other researchers say that the second issue be fewer leptin receptors (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4069066\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, the third issue is thought to arise from a problem in the leptin signaling cascade, which has been linked with leptin resistance (high<a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/socs3\/\"> SOCS3<\/a>, low <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/jak2\/?utm_source=seo&amp;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;utm_campaign=id00002\">JAK2<\/a>, low <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-stat3-inhibitors\/\">STAT3<\/a>). However, human studies have yet to look into these pathways (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4069066\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In animals, <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-natural-ways-to-increase-bdnf\/\">BDNF<\/a> seems to be needed for leptin to cause<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-effective-ways-to-lose-weight\/\"> weight loss<\/a>. Lower BDNF has been associated with leptin resistance and weight gain. Although intriguing, this doesn\u2019t tell us anything about leptin resistance in humans. Plus, we can\u2019t measure BDNF commercially and scientists are still trying to understand its roles in the human body (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4069066\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>All in all, there is no single cause of leptin resistance. Many pathways have been proposed, and it\u2019s likely that each one contributes to a certain extent. Large human studies are needed to better understand what might lead to leptin resistance in humans.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Factors_that_May_Increase_Leptin_Sensitivity\"><a id=\"post-15750-_89gpkkrvwbme\"><\/a><strong>Factors that May Increase Leptin Sensitivity<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"When_to_See_a_Doctor\"><a id=\"post-15750-_ve7x7ba3vx3w\"><\/a>When to See a Doctor<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re struggling with obesity or leptin resistance, it\u2019s important to schedule a visit with your doctor.<\/p>\n<p>He or she should diagnose, treat, and monitor any underlying conditions causing your symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>Your doctor may also order some blood tests. A leptin test is usually ordered for overweight\/obese individuals, especially if there is a family history of obesity. It can also be ordered for an obese person who has symptoms of frequent, persistent <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-10-ways-to-curb-your-hunger-and-approaches-that-didnt-work\/\">hunger<\/a> to detect leptin deficiency or excess.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, it is used with other tests, such as a thyroid panel, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/glucose\/\">glucose<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cholesterol\/\">cholesterol<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/insulin-101\/\">insulin<\/a>, to determine the health status of an overweight\/obese person and identify underlying conditions that may be contributing to or worsening their condition.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s uncertain whether leptin resistance can be reversed. The complementary approaches listed below may help support metabolic and overall health.<\/p>\n<p>That said, you may try them if you and your doctor determine that they could be appropriate.<\/p>\n<p>Remember that none of them should ever be done in place of what your doctor recommends or prescribes.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Sleep_Circadian_Cues\"><a id=\"post-15750-_yg83qhra7aoh\"><\/a><strong>1) Sleep &amp; Circadian Cues<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/what-it-means-to-keep-to-a-circadian-rhythm\/\">Circadian<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/what-it-means-to-keep-to-a-circadian-rhythm\/\"> Rhythm Disruptions<\/a> have been linked with leptin resistance and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/132-biological-mechanisms-for-weight-modulation\/\">obesity<\/a> in animals (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cell.com\/cell-metabolism\/abstract\/S1550-4131(15)00272-7\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Most of the existing human studies deal with associations, so it\u2019s impossible to determine whether circadian issues can cause leptin resistance. However, keeping a healthy circadian rhythm is known to support mental and metabolic health.<\/p>\n<p>For example, one study suggested that night-shift workers, who must be awake, active, and eating during the night seem to be at a higher risk of obesity and metabolic diseases (<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0025079#pone.0025079-Knutsson1\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In another study, chronic jet lag disrupted the clock in fat cells and induced Leptin resistance in the brains in mice (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cell.com\/cell-metabolism\/abstract\/S1550-4131(15)00272-7\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Many people that don\u2019t travel across time zones much might not get enough light in the day and too much light at night, which could disrupt the natural biological rhythm.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, it would be a good idea to stick to a certain sleep hygiene. If possible, aim to keep a healthy circadian rhythm. Get some sunlight during the day and enough restful sleep and darkness during the night.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Avoiding_Nighttime_Snacks\"><a id=\"post-15750-_x7z31sqnlvb4\"><\/a><strong>2) Avoiding Nighttime Snacks<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Some studies propose that we\u2019ve eaten for about 12 hours in the day and fasted for 12 hours at night over the natural course of mammalian history [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4250148\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In line with the circadian cues theory, it has also been hypothesized that eating during the \u201cwrong\u201d time may contribute to circadian desynchronization and weight gain.<\/p>\n<p>In small human studies, eating after 8 PM was associated with weight gain. Larger studies are needed to understand exactly which foods, in what amounts, and at what time are \u201cwrong\u201d in most humans, though (<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0025079\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22222118\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In lab animals, eating at the wrong time seems to cause changes in leptin that result in weight gain (<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0025079\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22222118\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Mice eating a<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/low-carb-diet-vs-high-carb-diet\/\"> high-fat diet<\/a> only during the \u201cwrong\u2019\u201dcircadian phase appear to gain 2.5x more weight than mice fed the same diet during the mice\u2019s natural feeding period (<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0025079#pone.0025079-Arble1\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>One mechanism by which obesity is hypothesized to result from eating at the wrong time&#8211;namely, at night&#8211;is by preventing the calories from being burned.<\/p>\n<p>In humans, eating identical meals (~544 kcals; 15% protein, 35% fat, 50% carbohydrate) in the nighttime vs daytime results in less generation of heat (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4425165\/#B4-nutrients-07-02648\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, studies in healthy adults have suggested that meal satiety also varies with time of day and that food intake during the night may be less satiating and leads to greater daily caloric intake compared to food consumed in the morning hours [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4425165\/#B6-nutrients-07-02648\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4425165\/#B7-nutrients-07-02648\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Thus, some scientists have proposed that <em>when<\/em> people eat might be more important than <em>what<\/em> they eat and maybe even than <em>how much<\/em> people eat. However, all of these factors are important.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from not overeating and following a nutritious diet, avoiding nighttime meals seems like a good idea.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Avoiding_Overeating\"><a id=\"post-15750-_3caxerr4s9ug\"><\/a>3) Avoiding Overeating<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Chronically high levels of leptin may eventually cause leptin resistance as a means to stay in homeostasis, animal studies suggest (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4069066\/#R171\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Researchers consider that the act of overeating may lead to chronically high levels of leptin in the long run, potentially causing leptin resistance. At that point, people usually find it harder to <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-effective-ways-to-lose-weight\/\">lose weight<\/a> because several metabolic pathways are out of balance [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2894068\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Also, eating too many calories&#8211;or overeating&#8211;eventually leads to obesity and other detrimental health consequences, especially in people who eat unhealthy foods. It can increase inflammation, blood lipids, blood sugar, and increase the risk of many chronic diseases [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK235013\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re not sure where to start, talk to your healthcare provider. They should help you set an initial plan to limit your daily calories while upping your intake of nutritious foods.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Reducing_Refined_Sugars\"><a id=\"post-15750-_k5bskdrmfr97\"><\/a>4) Reducing Refined Sugars<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The consumption of too much sugar AND <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/low-carb-diet-vs-high-carb-diet\/\">saturated fat<\/a> in the typical Western diet is thought to be a crucial contributor to the alarming incidence of obesity (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25589226\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Unhealthy, fast-food-type diets have been reported to induce an inflammatory response in the<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/hypothalamus-101\/\"> hypothalamus<\/a> in animals, which seems to promote the development of brain leptin resistance and obesity (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25589226\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Studies suggest that eating too much fat and carbs can also increase fatty acids in the blood. On the other hand, reducing refined carbs likely decrease <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/triglycerides\/\">triglycerides <\/a>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa022637\">R<\/a>), which theoretically might support leptin transport to the brain.<\/p>\n<p>These mechanisms haven\u2019t been proven in humans, but we know that diets high in refined sugars and fat are unhealthy. Aim to reduce your intake of sugar, refined carbs like white bread, and saturated fats. Opt in for high-fiber foods and complex (low glycemic index) carbs instead.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"5_Increasing_Healthy_Proteins\"><a id=\"post-15750-_y3kn4n80afg9\"><\/a><strong>5) Increasing Healthy Proteins<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a small study of 19 people, an increase in dietary protein from 15% to 30% of caloric intake (at a constant carbohydrate intake) produced a sustained decrease in caloric intake. The participants also lost weight (<a href=\"http:\/\/ajcn.nutrition.org\/content\/82\/1\/41.full\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The authors proposed that this may have been mediated by increased leptin sensitivity in the brain. They believe the appetite-reducing effect of protein may contribute to the weight loss produced by low-carbohydrate diets (<a href=\"http:\/\/ajcn.nutrition.org\/content\/82\/1\/41.full\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In a trial of postmenopausal women, a low-carb diet with exercise lowered leptin levels and increased<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/adiponectin\/\"> adiponectin<\/a>, which resulted in weight loss (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4000357\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Studies found that reducing carbs may also lower triglycerides. However, people should have in mind that these studies used very specific diets and typically had strict food lists (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa022637\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, it\u2019s usually not just about reducing your carb intake by any means. You should make sure to get healthy protein sources and be mindful of the carbs that you take in. For example, even if carbs make up only a minority of your calories, you don\u2019t want to be consuming sugar and pasta for carbs only.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019d like to lower your carb intake but aren\u2019t sure how, speak to your healthcare provider and a licensed nutritionist to get some recommendations.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"6_Exercise\"><a id=\"post-15750-_9tzo769vp1f2\"><\/a><strong>6) Exercise<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Research suggests that <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-14-proven-health-benefits-exercise-references-mechanisms\/\">exercise<\/a> can be beneficial in multiple ways for <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-effective-ways-to-lose-weight\/\">weight loss<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/ajcn.nutrition.org\/content\/73\/2\/240.full\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Besides burning calories, scientists think that exercise improves hypothalamic leptin sensitivity at least in part through suppressing hypothalamic inflammation and inhibiting Endoplasmic Reticulum <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/63-factors-raising-stress-cortisol-level-backed-science\/\">stress<\/a> in rodents. These pathways haven\u2019t been explored in humans (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4069066\/#R187\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Moderate, regular exercise also likely increases<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-natural-ways-to-increase-bdnf\/\"> BDNF<\/a> and supports healthy blood lipid levels and general well-being [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/30249981\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"7_Reducing_Stress\"><a id=\"post-15750-_byux0bqolpvo\"><\/a><strong>7) Reducing Stress<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Chronic stress is often associated with weight gain. Finding ways to de-stress and relax on a regular basis is also key to a healthy lifestyle (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4026680\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"8_Resolving_Inflammation\"><a id=\"post-15750-_bb75d2g8r0b8\"><\/a>8) Resolving Inflammation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Low-grade, chronic hypothalamic inflammation has been associated with various metabolic disorders including obesity (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4069066\/#R174\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Work with your doctor to treat any underlying conditions causing your low-grade inflammation.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Experimental\"><a id=\"post-15750-_c49jyal0b6wy\"><\/a><strong>Experimental<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>The following factors are theoretical or anecdotal. They aren\u2019t backed up by solid science. We bring them up for informational purposes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-15750-_j06m4vba3qi5\"><\/a>Cold Showers<\/h4>\n<p>Scientists are investigating whether<a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/lepr\/\"> Leptin Receptor<\/a> activity increases with colder temperatures. Animal studies suggest it is associated with defense against<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/12-reasons-embrace-cold\/\"> cold<\/a> temperatures (<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosgenetics\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pgen.0040032\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/12-reasons-embrace-cold\/\">Cold<\/a> showers are popular among people who want to burn fat, lose weight, or get rid of cellulite. But is it really all that simple? <br \/>To rewind, leptin is produced by the body\u2019s fat cells.
