Check out this post to learn which of its purported benefits are supported by science.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_is_Berberine\"><b>What is Berberine?<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"Where_Does_it_Come_From_and_How_is_it_Used\"><b>Where Does it Come From and How is it Used?<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Berberine is a compound found in several different plants, including Barberry (<i>Berberis vulgaris<\/i>), Oregon Grape (<i>Mahonia aquifolium<\/i>), Goldenseal (<i>Hydrastis canadensis<\/i>), and Chinese goldthread (<i>Coptis chinensis<\/i>). It has a 3000-year history of use in traditional Chinese and Indian medicine [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6111450\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6111450\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Berberine has been studied for heart failure, diarrhea, infections, and other health conditions. But according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), very little berberine is absorbed when people take goldenseal orally (by mouth). Therefore, study results on berberine may not apply to goldenseal [<a href=\"https:\/\/nccih.nih.gov\/health\/goldenseal\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Berberine itself has many purported beneficial effects. It is often used for diabetes or cholesterol issues, and some evidence supports these uses. However, few quality, large-scale studies of berberine have been carried out so far.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Berberine is a compound found in many plants&#8211;such as goldenseal&#8211;that people in China and India use in folk medicine.<\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span id=\"Alleged_Health_Benefits_of_Berberine\"><b>Alleged Health Benefits of Berberine<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>Remember to speak with a doctor before taking berberine supplements. Berberine should never be used as a replacement for approved medical therapies.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Possibly_Effective\"><b>Possibly Effective:<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Canker_Sores\"><b>1) Canker Sores<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A topical application of Berberine gelatin (5 mg\/g) reduced pain and ulcer size in 84 people with canker sores[<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23246229\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Diabetes\"><b>2) Diabetes<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>According to one meta-analysis, berberine may be beneficial in people with type 2 diabetes. However, the authors emphasized that the evidence is weak overall since the included trials were few, had low methodological quality, small sample size, and unidentified risks of bias [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23118793\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In one study, berberine (0.5 g, 3x\/day for 3 months) performed similarly to<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/uses-benefits-metformin\/\"> metformin<\/a> (a diabetes medication). It reduced<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/hemoglobin-good-bad-lab-tests-normal-values-reference-ranges\/\"> hemoglobin<\/a> A1c (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/hba1c-what-is-it-and-why-is-it-important\/\">HbA1c<\/a>) levels, fasting blood<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/glucose\/\"> glucose<\/a>, blood glucose following a meal, and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/triglycerides\/\"> triglycerides<\/a> levels in 36 patients with type 2 diabetes [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2410097\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In the other half of the study, 48 patients with type 2 diabetes treated with berberine had similar results and also reduced plasma<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/insulin-101\/\"> insulin<\/a>. Further large-scale studies are needed.<\/p>\n<p>Based on lab experiments, scientists believe berberine might lower LDL via:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increasing activity at the<a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/LDLR\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\"> LDL receptor<\/a> in the liver [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17767919\">R<\/a>].<\/li>\n<li>Reducing<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/hepatocyte-nuclear-factor-hnfa\/\"> hepatocyte nuclear factor<\/a> 1alpha [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19687008\">R<\/a>].<\/li>\n<li>Inhibiting lipid synthesis through activation of<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-ampk-activators\/\"> AMPK<\/a> [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16508037\">R<\/a>].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Prelinary data show that berberine might help lower high cholesterol levels, but larger trials are needed.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"4_High_Blood_Pressurenbsp\"><b>4) High Blood Pressure&nbsp;<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4>As An Add-On to Drug Therapy<\/h4>\n<p>According to a large meta-analysis of clinical research, berberine supplements in combination with conventional therapy (amlodipin) reduces systolic blood pressure after 2 months [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25498346?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The combination lowered systolic blood pressure (upper reading) by 5 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure (lower reading) by 2 mmHg when compared to treatment with drug treatment alone&nbsp;[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25498346?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4>For Other Heart-Related Problems<\/h4>\n<p>Despite some promising findings, evidence is lacking to support the use of berberine in people with heart disease. Large-scale clinical studies should be encouraged.<\/p>\n<p>Berberine (1.2 &#8211; 2.0 g\/day) combined with several conventional therapies increased the quality of life (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-14-proven-health-benefits-exercise-references-mechanisms\/\">exercise<\/a> capacity and reduced fatigue) and decreased death rates (156 patients with chronic congestive heart failure) [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12860219\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Berberine showed potential to improve aspects of cardiovascular health in rat studies. It was also researched for possibly protective effects on heart muscle cells injured by the return of blood flow after blood flow restriction (such as after a stroke) in rats [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22188769\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21168503\"> R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12910687\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">When added to standard drug therapy, berberine may help lower high blood pressure. Its effects on other heart-related problems are unclear.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"5_PCOS\"><b>5) PCOS<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Some evidence suggests that berberine may improve metabolic health in women with PCOS and insulin resistance.<\/p>\n<p>In clinical trials, berberine taken for 3 months prior to ovarian stimulation for in vitro fertilization (IVF) reduced fasting blood sugar, insulin resistance, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, testosterone levels, and waist-to-hip ratio [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22019891?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23869585?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Berberine also increased HDL cholesterol and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) in women with PCOS and insulin resistance, compared with placebo [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22019891?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23869585?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Supplementation also appeared to improve lipid&nbsp; status (like LDL and total cholesterol) compared with metformin, the standard drug of choice [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22019891?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23869585?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, it&#8217;s still uncertain whether berberine improves the chance of pregnancy in women with PCOS who are trying to conceive.<\/p>\n<p>In one study, it was as effective as metformin but with fewer side effects. In another study, it didn&#8217;t improve outcomes when added to a new drug that stimulates ovulation (letrozole). Further research is needed to clarify these mixed findings [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23869585?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27336209?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">According to some clinical studies, berberine may improve metabolic health in women with PCOS. Its impact on pregnancy rates is less certain.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"Insufficient_Evidence\"><b>Insufficient Evidence:<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>The following purported benefits are only supported by limited, low-quality clinical studies.
