Taking regular curcumin supplements will unlikely provide benefits outside the gut [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28204864\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26942997\">R<\/a>]. Some forms of curcumin may be more bioavailable (such as <i>CurcuBrain<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>Turmeric (Curcuma Longa), most commonly known as the spice found in curry, is not only known for its flavor, but for its purported health benefits as well.<\/p>\n<p>Curcumin supplements have not been approved by the FDA for medical use. Supplements generally lack solid clinical research. Regulations set manufacturing standards for them but don&#8217;t guarantee that they&#8217;re safe or effective. Speak with your doctor before supplementing.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"How_much_do_we_know\">How much do we know?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCIH), there\u2019s a lot of research about turmeric or curcumin, including human studies, for a variety of health conditions [<a href=\"https:\/\/nccih.nih.gov\/health\/turmeric\/ataglance.htm\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, strong evidence is lacking to support claims that curcuminoids from turmeric help reduce inflammation [<a href=\"https:\/\/nccih.nih.gov\/health\/turmeric\/ataglance.htm\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Active_Compounds\">Active Compounds<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Turmeric contains several major constituents known as curcuminoids, which typically make up about 3% of its weight in commercially available preparations (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17044766\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Curcumin is known to be the most active phytochemical of the four curcuminoids found in turmeric. The authors proposed that curcumin helps balance the immune response [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27789120?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Depression\">3) Depression<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A recent review of clinical trials suggests that curcumin reduces depression symptoms as an add-on in people already using an antidepressants<\/p>\n<p>The effect of curcumin appears to be greater for middle-aged people compared to older people. Better effects were also seen in people who supplemented for at least 6 weeks and who used at least 1 gram daily [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26610378?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, various curcumin formulations were used in the included studies. They all had similar effectiveness, although one specific formulation (BCM-95) seemed to offer non-significantly greater benefits to people with depression than the typical curcumin-piperine formulations. Additional studies should look into various curcumin formulations [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26610378?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In older people, curcumin improved sustained attention, working memory, and mood (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25277322\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Scientists are investigating whether curcumin affects the development of new cells and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-natural-ways-to-increase-bdnf\/\"> BDNF<\/a> stores in the hippocampus in chronically stressed rats (a model of depression in animals) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17617388\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Other active areas of research are looking into the effects of curcumin on blood <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/need-know-cortisol-health-effects\/\">cortisol<\/a> levels and cortisol sensitivity (Glucocorticoid Receptor Expression), NMDA and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/5-ht2c\/\">5HT2C<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/5-ht2c\/\"> receptor<\/a> activation, and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/glutamate\/\">glutamate<\/a> activity in the brain (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17022948\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed?term=curcumin%205-ht2c\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK10807\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22960607\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In mice, potential interactions and synergistic effects between curcumin (+piperine) and SSRI and SNRI antidepressants are being researched (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18766332\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Nonalcoholic_fatty_liver_disease_NAFLD\">4) Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Clinical trials suggest that curcumin can reduce markers of liver injury and liver fat buildup in people non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27270872?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/30653773?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Scientists are exploring curcumin\u2019s NAFLD-related mechanisms in animals and cells. Some hypotheses suggest that curcumin improves NAFLD by raising <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/all-about-leptin-its-role-in-chronic-inflammation-cfs-and-weight\/\">leptin<\/a> sensitivity, inhibiting obesity-induced inflammation, and lowering <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ldl-cholesterol\/\">LDL<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cholesterol\/\">cholesterol<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/triglycerides\/\">triglycerides<\/a>. These mechanisms remain to be confirmed in humans (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20222050\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3753829\/#b244\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"5_Itchy_Skin_Pruritus\">5) Itchy Skin (Pruritus)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>According to clinical trials, turmeric 500 mg orally three times daily for 8 weeks decreases symptoms of itchy skin (uremic pruritus) in patients with end-stage renal disease [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24482090\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Early clinical findings also suggest that curcumin reduces pruritus severity and improves quality of life in patients with sulfur mustard-induced chronic pruritus after daily use for 4 weeks [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22099425?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23038702?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Possibly_Ineffective_for\">Possibly Ineffective for:<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4>High Blood Lipids<\/h4>\n<p>The effects of turmeric on cholesterol levels are mixed.<\/p>\n<p>Some studies suggest turmeric lowers the \u201cbad\u201d cholesterol LDL and triglycerides but doesn\u2019t affect total cholesterol or the \u201cgood\u201d cholesterol HDL. Another review suggested that curcumin improves HDL but doesn\u2019t affect LDL. Future studies need to clarify the conflicting findings [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29020971?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29185808?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, it\u2019s uncertain which curcumin formulations have a meaningful effect. More research is needed [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29020971?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29185808?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4>Peptic Ulcers<\/h4>\n<p>Based on the available evidence, it\u2019s possible that curcumin has no effect on peptic ulcers [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23195696\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7964234?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4>Radiation Dermatitis<\/h4>\n<p>Existing studies suggest that curcumin doesn\u2019t improve radiation dermatitis, which is a type of skin damage and irritation caused by radiotherapy [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29192329?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Likely_Ineffective_for\">Likely Ineffective for:<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4>Alzheimer\u2019s Disease<\/h4>\n<p>The existing evidence does not support the use of turmeric in patients with Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p>In a small trial, 1-4 g\/day of curcumin for 6 months had no effect on mental and cognitive state in patients with Alzheimer disease (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18204357?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>A meta-analysis of studies revealed that the<b> turmeric group may have experienced greater cognitive decline when compared with placebo<\/b>. Data are limited by small sample sizes and patient variability, but there\u2019s enough evidence to advise against turmeric in people with Alzheimer\u2019s [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/30575152?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>These findings outline how <b>a compound can have completely different effects in animals than in live human beings<\/b>. It should serve as a reminder that animal findings should always be interpreted with extreme caution and healthy skepticism.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the above-mentioned clinical trials, many animal experiments suggested that curcumin can \u201creverse cognitive decline, memory deficits, and inflammation in animal models of Alzheimer\u2019s disease.\u201d Various mechanisms were proposed (like increasing neurogenesis, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-natural-ways-to-increase-bdnf\/\"><b>BDNF<\/b><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/creb1\/?utm_source=seo&amp;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;utm_campaign=id00002\"><b>CREB<\/b><\/a>). Yet, curcumin was a failure clinically (<a href=\"http:\/\/jpet.aspetjournals.org\/content\/326\/1\/196.full\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26828892\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24712702\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0131525\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2386914\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Insufficient_Evidence_for\">Insufficient Evidence for:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>The following purported benefits are only supported by limited, low-quality clinical studies. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>There is insufficient evidence to support the use of curcumin for any of the below-listed uses. Remember to speak with a doctor before taking curcumin supplements. Curcumin should never be used as a replacement for approved medical therapies.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Joint Pain &amp; Arthritis<\/h4>\n<p>In patients with rheumatoid arthritis, 500mg curcumin + diclofenac sodium was found to be effective (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22407780\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4>Crohn\u2019s Disease<\/h4>\n<p>Low-quality evidence suggests curcumin may reduce bowel movements, diarrhea, and stomach pain in people with Crohn disease after daily supplementation for a month (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16240238?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4>Lupus<\/h4>\n<p>According to preliminary research, in Lupus patients, short-term turmeric supplementation decreases blood and protein in the urine along with systolic blood pressure (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21742514\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4>Diabetes<\/h4>\n<p>Preliminary data suggests that curcumin improves cardiovascular function and reduces <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\">oxidative stress<\/a> in diabetic patients (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3753829\/#b233\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>A nine-month curcumin intervention significantly lowers the chances that prediabetes develops into Type II diabetes, potentially improving the overall function of pancreatic cells (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22773702\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4>PMS<\/h4>\n<p>Curcumin reduced the severity of<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/relieve-pms-naturally\/\"> PMS<\/a> in a very small human study (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26051565\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26608718\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Animal_Research_Lacking_Evidence\">Animal Research (Lacking Evidence)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>No clinical evidence supports the use of curcumin for any of the conditions listed in this section. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Below is a summary of the existing animal and cell-based research, which should guide further investigational efforts.
