Make sure to consult with your doctor before making any significant changes to your day-to-day routine.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Lifestyle\"><a id=\"post-137518-_uz76gcsjdtwn\"><\/a>Lifestyle<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"Low-Level_Laser_Therapy\"><a id=\"post-137518-_f7hcs3cc3cwt\"><\/a>Low-Level Laser Therapy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Low-level laser therapy (<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/my-review-of-lllt\/\">LLLT<\/a>) is the application of low-power lasers to the surface of the body. It seems to stimulate the production of NO and free radicals, both of which act as messenger molecules to trigger physiological responses such as hair growth [<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33111207\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The FDA approved this technique for male-pattern baldness in 2007. Meta-analyses of 11 different placebo-controlled trials suggest that LLLT may improve hair growth and density, both alone and in combination with conventional treatments. However, they warned that larger studies with longer follow-up periods and independent sources of funding are required to confirm these results [<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29270707\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29286826\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30706177\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Giving_Up_Smoking\"><a id=\"post-137518-_zgwld39eth0o\"><\/a>Giving Up Smoking<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Several studies have associated smoking with an approximately 2-fold increased risk of male-pattern baldness. Cigarette smoke may cause oxidative and inflammatory damage in the hair follicles, impair hair growth, and reduce female sex hormone levels. A study found that the combination of smoking with being overweight increased male-pattern baldness severity [<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12673073\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28555720\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18025364\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32946667\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23629119\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Maintaining_a_Healthy_Weight\"><a id=\"post-137518-_fahsafr6qoyy\"><\/a>Maintaining a Healthy Weight<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Being overweight or obese has been associated with increased severity of male-pattern baldness [<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24184140\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28555720\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24746780\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Scalp_Massage\"><a id=\"post-137518-_q7xj6b9z633x\"><\/a>Scalp Massage<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Scalp massage for 4 minutes during 24 weeks improved hair thickness, possibly by increasing the levels of several proteins involved in hair growth, in a small uncontrolled trial of 9 men. In a survey on 340 men with male-pattern baldness, scalp massage improved self-perceived hair density [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4740347\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6380978\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Diet\"><a id=\"post-137518-_uowemiebf5z5\"><\/a>Diet<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"Eating_Sufficient_Proteins\"><a id=\"post-137518-_a77somskkfe6\"><\/a>Eating Sufficient Proteins<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a study of 100 people with hair loss, most of the 34 subjects with male-pattern baldness had deficiencies of the essential amino acids <a href=\"https:\/\/www.selfhacked.com\/blog\/histidine\/\">histidine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.selfhacked.com\/blog\/leucine-health-benefits-side-effects\/\">leucine<\/a>, and isoleucine. Moreover, patients were more satisfied with adenosine because they perceived faster reduction of hair loss and growth of new hairs [<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24183218\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"L-Carnitine_Insufficient_Evidence\"><a id=\"post-137518-_f6r39fetkc1i\"><\/a>L-Carnitine (Insufficient Evidence)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a placebo-controlled trial of 60 men and women with baldness caused by male sex hormones, topical application of a solution with 2% L-<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/carnitine-top-18-science-based-health-effects-carnitine\/\">carnitine<\/a> for 6 months increased hair density and the proportion of hairs in the active growth phase.
