The current coronavirus outbreak is an ongoing event and certain details may change as new information comes to light. No effective or FDA-approved products are currently available for the treatment of the new coronavirus (also known as SARS-CoV-2 or 2019-nCoV), although research is still ongoing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Schisandra, also referred to as Schizandra or <em>Schisandra chinensis,<\/em> comes from a vine native to China and parts of Russia. Its berry is used as a form of traditional Chinese medicine.<\/p>\n<p>The fruit is also known as the Five Flavor Berry because its taste captures the five major favors \u2013 sour, sweet, salty, bitter, and spicy [<a href=\"http:\/\/apps.who.int\/medicinedocs\/documents\/s14213e\/s14213e.pdf\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Viral_Infections\">Viral Infections<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a pilot trial on 50 people with chronic hepatitis C, an oral combination of antioxidants including <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/schisandra\/\">schisandra <\/a>reduced viral load, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.selfhacked.com\/blog\/alanine-aminotransferase\/\">ALT<\/a> levels, and tissue damage in 25-44% of the patients and improved health assessment in 58% [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16082287\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Different compounds isolated from the berry inhibited the hepatitis B and C viruses in cell-based studies [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25882501\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19228000\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19640714\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17904789\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4890123\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In chicken, supplementation with schisandra improved antibody titers against Newcastle disease and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/lymphocytes\/\">lymphocyte<\/a> proliferation [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17236706\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In mice with heart muscle inflammation caused by the coxsackievirus B3, a traditional Chinese medicine formula with schisandra (Qishaowuwei) increased survival, restored the CD4+ to <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/homing-fundamenal-cause-epstein-barr-reactivation\/#Top_Supplements_to_Increase_CD8_T_Cells\">CD8+<\/a> T cell balance, and reduced heart tissue damage and viral loads [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19932162\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Compounds isolated from different schisandra species were active against the following viruses in test tubes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>HIV [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22041069\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16499331\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19413342\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16494492\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25740376\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4667461\/\">R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Herpes simplex 1 [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25044591\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20536188\">R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Epstein-Barr virus [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23738455\">R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Schisandra has demonstrated antiviral activity in limited clinical trials and in cell and animal studies.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"Pneumonia\">Pneumonia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In 60 pneumonia patients, a product containing <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/rhodiola\/\">rhodiola<\/a>, schisandra, and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/eleuthero\/\">Siberian <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ginseng\/\">ginseng<\/a> (ADAPT-232) reduced the duration of antibiotic treatment and improved quality of life, compared to standard treatment alone [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16323290\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In an antibacterial study, lignan-containing schisandra extract inhibited a microbe that causes pneumonia (<em>Chlamydia<\/em> <em>pneumoniae<\/em>) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26197536\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Lung_Damage_and_Failure\">Lung Damage and Failure<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In guinea pigs with cough and lung inflammation caused by cigarette smoke, schisandra extract and several of its compounds (including fruit polysaccharide 1) suppressed cough and reduced the production of pro-inflammatory molecules [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25681545\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27497637\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Both schisandra extract and its compound schisantherin A reduced lung inflammation and acute respiratory distress syndrome caused by bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in mice [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22543173\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24975658\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The combination of schisandra\u2019s active compound schisandrin B and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/licorice\/\">licorice<\/a>\u2019s glycyrrhizin protected mice from lung tissue scarring caused by a chemotherapeutic drug (bleomycin) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28476015\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Schisandra extract protected animals from lung inflammation and damage.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"Asthma\">Asthma<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In asthmatic mice, oral schisandra fruit syrup improved lung function and reduced the blood levels of 2 inflammatory mediators (nitric oxide and IL-6) [<a
