No effective or FDA-approved products are currently available for the treatment of the new coronavirus (also known as SARS-CoV-2 or 2019-nCoV), although research is still ongoing.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Anti Infection Potential<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a small trial on 5 people with chronic hepatitis C, <\/span><i style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Agaricus blazei <\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extract slightly reduced viral load and induced some immune-related proteins [<\/span><a style=\"font-size: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16782544\">R<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">].<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In cell-based studies, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agaricus blazei <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">polysaccharides inhibited the viruses that cause:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poliomyelitis [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17594456\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">]<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral and genital herpes [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21787804\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25359160\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">]<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common flu [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28954960\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">]<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Western equine encephalitis [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11515550\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">]<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Unfortunately, no studies exist even in cells on how agaricus would affect coronaviruses. Even if there were studies in cells, we wouldn&#8217;t know if it would translate to humans at all.<\/p>\n<h2>Immune Stimulation<\/h2>\n<p>Agaricus does have general immune stimulatory properties, which may be good in general if you&#8217;re immunodeficient, but no clinical trials have been done with regard to infections, including COVID-19 infections.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cell wall of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agaricus blazei <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and other fungi contains \u03b2-glucans that are recognized by immune cells and stimulate the immune response [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3168293\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6618291\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">].<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a clinical trial on 100 women with gynecological cancers, treatment with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agaricus blazei <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extract increased natural killer cell activity [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15304151\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">].<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In cells, beta-glucan-rich Agaricus blazei extracts increased the production of cytokines (TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, IL-6, IL-8, and MCP-1) growth factors (G-CSF), and messenger molecules (nitric oxide and ROS) [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17091395\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19885842\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11482452\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20036142\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17550380\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">].<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In mice, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agaricus blazei <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extract enhanced the effectiveness of the vaccines against foot-and-mouth disease [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16213597\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] and hepatitis B [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15037217\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">].<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In asthmatic mice, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agaricus blazei <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevented allergic episodes by reducing Th2 dominance [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2688003\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18720167\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">].<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><em>This article is for informational purposes only.
