It declines with age, in conjunction with cognitive deficits [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4176932\/#R27\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4176932\/#R19\"> R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4176932\/#R60\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4176932\/#R61\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>According to some research, it plays a role in longevity [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4176932\/#R37\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4176932\/#R36\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>It also helps <b>regenerate muscle<\/b> (by inhibiting <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/tgf\/\">TGF<\/a>) [<a href=\"http:\/\/journal.frontiersin.org\/article\/10.3389\/fphys.2014.00189\/full\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>People with genetic variants with higher levels of Klotho had lower rates of heart disease in one study [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15677572\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Klotho <b>suppresses<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/insulin-101\/\"><b>insulin<\/b><\/a><b> and<\/b> <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-truth-about-igf-1-top-10-benefits-and-potential-drawbacks\/\"><b>IGF-1<\/b><\/a> pathways in mice. Improving your Klotho levels won\u2019t necessarily cause health improvement of any kind.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The following is a list of factors and complementary approaches that may increase Klotho levels. Additional large-scale studies are needed before making any conclusions. Remember to talk to your doctor before making any major changes to your day-to-day routine.<\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-14-proven-health-benefits-exercise-references-mechanisms\/\"><b>Exercise<\/b><\/a> &#8211; in both humans and mice. Klotho only increases post-exercise in people who completed a 16-week training program, with younger people having a bigger increase than older people.
