I drank through five pregnancies and gave mate with hot milk in a cup almost daily to my kids. It is considered the poor-man’s tea because it’s so cheap to buy. It’s our peace-pipe in social gatherings!
I’m so happy that over the almost 20 years I’ve been living in the US I’ve been able to buy Yerba mate online and in some stores or bring a suitcase full on my trips home.
My grandkids are crazy about the drink and ask for it whenever I’m with them.
It’s the best drink for long trips—I drive and my husband “ceba mate”—serves it in the gourd.
Great article!!! Makes me happy to know I drink a healthy tea.

With regard to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PACs), isn’t it important to distinguish traditional smoked yerba mate (and also dried with high heat) with varieties now on the market that are NOT smoked and dried over low heat (for instance Mate Factor’s “fresh green” and unaged variety). My guess would be that not smoking, not drying over high heat would significantly reduce PACs.
