I’ve been biohacking genomics back before sites like yours existed, and I’m far more focused on nutrient deficiency than genomic testing… but people still seek my input about their results, and having a site like yours to which I can refer means the world to me. Thank you for everything you do–especially all the hard work you must put into these explanations–and providing something truly relatable AND well cited for others to learn more. I find it’s rare that blogs have both.

One last thing: Your phrasing is incredibly eloquent. “A study of adolescent substance use (cigarette smoking, alcohol, and cannabis) FOUND A COMPLEX ASSOCIATION between COMT methylation and substance abuse” … I feel the depth in your knowledge from that single phrase (although it’s evident throughout the site) and love the way you share it!

Thanks again,
Annie @biomedbitch

What is the best way to go about monitoring “balance” as far as neurotransmitter accumulation besides having good days/cycles and bad and self-monitroring?

Best way to make sure one is maintaining with appropriate lifestyle interventions and not takin g one step forward and two steps back?

Does the rs480 A,G alleles impact? Thoughts on supplementing with l-tyrosine or N acetyl l-tyrosine, pine bark extract, panax ginseng, and Gingko bilob?

Are there any other herbs or vitamins suggest to help increase dopamine production?

Nothing was noted regarding Val/Val, Met/Met, or Val/Met. How would I know which genotype is mine?

I assume this is for legal reasons. However, does anyone know where I can find more information about what supplements/drugs suppress COMT gene expression? I really liked having that information at the end of each article, It’s disappointing that it’s been removed.

This article used to contain a variety of supplements, vitamins, and drugs that will assist someone with with either low dopamine levels/High COMT and those who have high dopamine levels/Low COMT. Would you please list those substances again in in a future update of this article explaining the differences in the COMT gene among a person’s DNA?

After conducting some basic research on the “Warrior Gene,” I’ve become somewhat confused on what appears to be an issue between two different perspectives or concepts. For example, I’ve seen articles on the “Warrior Gene” that refer to the rs4680 G/G and the increased COMT breakdown of dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine, which in return allows for lower levels of these hormones in those who possess the rs4680 to help better manage stress levels. However, a second “Warrior Gene” concept pertains to the MAOA-L, in which a person who possesses this trait has higher levels of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, which then correlates with less ability of handling stress levels.

Here’s one article of several that goes into this issue on the MAOA-L.

https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/psychology-writers/201104/triggering-the-warrior-gene-in-villain-or-hero

So, my question is: What am I missing between these two “Warrior Gene” concepts regarding the breakdown of hormones. Additionally, as the rs4680 mentions epinephrine, the MAOA-L mentions serotonin. With that, am I seeing some inconsistencies between these “Warrior Gene” concepts? That is, and as a reiteration, one appears allow for better stress management (rs4680 G/G) while the other for less stress management (MAOA-L).

Sincerely, Bryant Daniels

I can attest to the greater verbal fluency for women — I majored in English, graduated cum laude, took to Spanish well, and learned most aspects of grammar, spelling, etc. quite naturally and easily. I don’t know about empathic, though, as I was diagnosed Aspergers…lol. I do cooperate well with rules, though. As far as executive functioning, that’s always been an issue for me. I have never been good at multi-tasking, so yeah that fits too. But I think I’m poor even under stress as well.

PTSD and/or hypopit syndrome from any injuries that can “shock” the brainstem (i.e., sleep center) will interrupt sleep. Pain will also interrupt sleep. REM sleep should be achieved within 110 minutes of sleeping and the goal is to obtain 2 hours of REM sleep and 2 hours of slow wave sleep each night. If central apneas present on sleep study you need a bipap SVR. Psoariatic arthritis and/or other forms of arthritis can build up in the foramina of the vertebrae restricting the function of nerves in the cervical spine (C3-4-5) which innervate the diaphragm which is what is used to breathe during REM sleep. Usually central apneas will cause you to wake up at 1 am – 3 am in the morning – sweating and heart palpitations- need to urinate. Facet injections can help with this and taking any narcotics and/or benzos will cause central apneas and this may be why you are having to take so much to get any results. Medical cannabis is proven to reverse white matter damage caused by narcotics and will restore slow wave sleep and improve cognitive function. This is really just a little piece of the puzzle but maybe it will help. :) Also, if you have a history of migraines and/or anyone in your family (mother’s side) has history of aneurysm of the brain and/or aorta and/or have had aortic valve replacement and or have cranial nerve- all could be explained w/ an MRA of your brain. If you are missing and/or have a hypoplastic artery in your brain this will affect your sleep architecture, can cause diabetes, set off autoimmune disease and will affect brain development due to decreased blood flow to those areas of the brain.

RESULTS:
Six-month old male but not female ArKO mice develop compulsive behaviors such as excessive barbering, grooming and wheel-running. Excessive activities were reversed by 3 weeks of 17beta-estradiol replacement. Interestingly, the presentation of compulsive behaviors is accompanied by concomitant decreases (p < .05) in hypothalamic COMT protein levels in male ArKO mice. These values returned to normal upon 17beta-estradiol treatment. In contrast, hepatic and frontal cortex COMT levels were not affected by the estrogen status, indicating region- and tissue-specific regulation of COMT levels by estrogen. No differences in COMT levels were detectable between female animals of both genotypes.

CONCLUSIONS:
This study describes the novel observation of a possible link between estrogen, COMT and development of compulsive behaviors in male animals which may have therapeutic implications in obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) patients.

I heard that it is very important to avoid hypoglycemia if you have a AA variant of the COMT. Can you tell me why? I tried to keep my blood sugar as stable as possible by eating starches with lots of fat and fibre. Is that correct? I have the feeling that I still get hypoglycemic when I have to concentrate very hard. You think eating fruits or MCT oil is a good idea in times of ‘extensive thinking? I am afraid that I could crash afterwards. Thanks a lot and best regards
