But there are studies showing that tryptophan restriction extends lifespan, and improves lifetime health.

Just use some form of 5-HTP instead.

Hi Angela, we recommend that you talk to a doctor before taking a new supplement or drug. Although there isn’t any evidence of tryptophan interacting with these drugs, tryptophan does have effects on blood pressure. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3152873/

My aunt has to take both since having a stent placed last March and a side effect of the medication is depression. She isn’t depressed but she is on edge quite often and she’d like to try 5-htp vs an anti anxiety drug.

Surprised you guys keep doing down that road.

NEJM concluded: “numerous studies of norepinephrine and serotonin metabolites in plasma, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid as well as postmortem studies of the brains of patients with depression, have yet to identify the purported deficiency reliably.”

There is a section on tryptophan drug interactions. Any particular drug that you’re interested in?

The biosynthesis of niacin occurs via the kynurenine pathway of which quinolinic acid is an intermediary. This pathway shunts tryptophan metabolism away from serotonin(and BDNF producton which serotonin co-regulates) towards niacin production. If you have adequate niacin, then it’s less necessary for the body to synthesize more. If you supplement with tryptophan oor 5-HTP take it alongside niacin.
