It’s my understanding that royal jelly and bee pollen are good natural sources of BH4. I’ve often used a high potency bee pollen/royal jelly supplement in lieu of the very expensive BH4 supplement, and seem to get good results–namely, avoiding depression (although I also depend on D3/K2, a good B-complex, sometimes extra B12, and always magnesium). Could something be added to this article if you can confirm and expand on the idea of natural sources for BH4?

I got this information from my consultant, a methylation expert, who suggested royal jelly when the BH4 was temporarily unavailable. Later I got a similar suggestion from an MD with the same expertise, only she recommended high-dose bee pollen.

I’m guessing non native EMF exposure (WiFi, cell phone etc) will deplete BH4 because of increased NOS through increased intracellular calcium and peroxynitrite, Could this EMF exposure be the more critical environmental factor (vs. genetic snps) causing anxiety and depression through abnormal neurotransmitter production?

Hello, I have the CBS gene which has,been depleting my BH4 and causing chronic hives and effecting mood creating anxiety at times. I need to go to a doctor who understands this and how to treat this. Any recommendations? Also, is they any place that BH4 can be purchased since from this post the lab suggested does not sell it for human consumption. Please help.

The lab HDRI does the testing and you have to have a doc order and draw the blood. I did get my general med doc to do this for me!

Hi, for your daughter, type 1 diabetes often has auto antibodies to the GAD enzyme which converts glutamate to GABA. GABA is important to gut motility. You can try a GABA supplement seems if it helps get things moving. Start low and go slow. NAC might be helpful with the migraines as will R5P Riboflavin, P5P B6 and magnesium. CBD oil might also help with migraine.

as I read, BH4 does not cross the bloodbrainbarrier. That’s why docs supplement with 5htp and L-Dopa and Carbidopa. You say, that you felt a reaction in your Brain (more focus, relaxation). I’m purchasing the BH4 from irc.org. My son’s physician wants him to take 10-15mg of BH4. irc.org only sells BH4 compounded with ascorbic acid, with 50mg BH4 per 1,000mg. So, how much should I give my son for the equivalent of 10-15mg of BH4? My poor math tells me 1/3 of a gram of the compounded formula to get 10-15mg of BH4. Is that correct?
