Then in 2014 I was told I did not have enough SP and was prescribed Endep to treat stomach pain Meanwhile as time went by I was further challenged with a host of unexplained health conditions including restless legs, constant headaches, thyroid, gut problems and osteoarthritis, chronic cystitis and the most distressing and insidious need to continually clear my throat has slowly escalated to being unmanageable as it constantly interrupts my sleep so I am chronically exhausted Recently I suffered from yet another dry socket and subsequently I believe I have again succumbed to what I believe is chronic fatigue.Over the years I haven constantly asked GP’s if they were familiar with SP and the vast majority have not ever heard the word so my chronic conditions have never been addressed
Therefore I have tried to find a specialist that is an expert in SP an d I have tried Googling but no success
What specialist field would you suggest please? Thanks very much for your clear and comprehensive article julie Crow

If you need further information but more Important Who do I consult that is an expert in SP????

I have a medical degree, but I’m not a doctor. I suffer from chronic pain due to several injuries. I knew what Substance P was because it was discussed briefly in graduate school. We weren’t taught any details though. Your article is wonderfully written!

THANK YOU.

The two seem to go together. I heard about substance P from a doctor on TV. The only thing I can think of that might lower it would be the capsacian, Which I haven’t tried. But I’ve tried lots of other antidepressants and pain medicine which is just a temporary Band-Aid and didn’t work all that well. Lyrica is the only thing that works for fibromyalgia pain but is way too expensive. Any ideas that might help would be appreciated.

I’ve had headaches lately and also TMJ in the past and wonder if my TMJ is elevated.

Summarized such spread out & not well known info. Some trigger is causing this as anxiety then tinnitus. Heavy metal & mold, poss. Exasperated by emf. Source of trigger needs to be found. Doctors are not treating and classifying substance p symptoms as mental illness & treating with drugs that do not address sub o trigger.

In both conditions, the nerve inflammation is a common consequence then Substance P levels should be upregulated in both conditions?

But this
“Natural Substances That Lower Substance P

Capsaicin: Capsaicin, an active component of chili peppers, depletes substance P from nerve endings. It also works by de-sensitizing sensory receptors on the skin, which helps reduce pain [R, R].”
–and yes I realize it’s from references–

seems to contradict the reference about potassium:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16696851
Substance P release evoked by capsaicin or potassium from rat cultured dorsal root ganglion neurons is conversely modulated with bradykinin.

This is why supplements are limited to 99 mg per pill usually – it can burn through the stomach lining if too much is taken without sufficie t fluid.

I have Interstitial cystitis and Find that high potassium foods really aggravate the pain and dysfunction, so it was interesting to read that potassium increases pain chemical signalling
