Not addressed in this article is the differentiation between what was formally called atypical depression… NOT major depressive disorder with a typical characteristics or something similar. I believe atypical depression should be restored in the DSM is a separate thing because I believe it to be a completely different critter. The symptom cluster is truly bizarre- trust me, but missing only one, specifically known as “incentive salience” that is the loss of one’s ability to ANTICIPATE enjoying something (not anhedonia). Enjoyment is still experienced, but can’t be meaningfully anticipated, and that loss takes with it any motivation to action. Anyway, one of the actual diagnostic criterion enumerated was that it did not respond to traditional anti-depressants. I take 40 mg per day for atypical depression, as my symptom profile matched that as described in the DSM four, I think it was, it matched the description as if someone had been reading my mail. It is the only thing I have taken after trying countless other traditional medication that has made a difference in my life. One of the most amazing, helpful non-harmful, drugs ever discovered. It has the potential to add 40% to one’s lifespan. I used to get it out of Spain but Obama’s Big Pharma loving Feds shut the door on that.
