1- This study, https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4984713/, shows that olive oil can increase DHA levels in the brain, even when those levels are negatively affected by certain chemicals (e.g. it has neuroprotective effects).

2- Regarding your question about our ancestors and olive oil:
There is some proof that olive oil might have been pressed as long ago as 5,000 BC. While this is not ancient from an evolutionary perspective, it certainly isn’t recent. Extracting olive oil is a relatively simple process since it is just the “juice” of the olives and doesn’t require elaborate processing methods.

Olive oil is mostly monounsaturated fats (Omega-9), which don’t affect the levels of omega-3s or 6s in the blood. The percentage of Linoleic Acid (Omega-6) in olive oil ranges from 3.5-21%, the average seems to be around 15%, though higher quality extra virgin oils are typically in the lower ranges. It is worth spending a little more to get fresh, high-quality EVOO.

To put that in perspective, regarding your concern, if you were to have two tablespoons a day of regular EVOO (28g of oil) at 15% LA, you would only be getting about 4 grams a day of Omega-6, which is not a large amount. Most people get much higher intakes of Omega-6s from other fat sources.

Keeping that in mind, balancing your Omega-3s at a 1:3 or 1:4 ratio would only require one quality Omega-3 capsule a day.

I really can’t believe this hasn’t been done so far, since omega 3 is so easy to test in human blood cells. You can even buy a self test kit.

It would be very important to find out, wether olive oil can increase omega 3 levels despite its high omega 6 content or at least does not have a negative effect on omega 3 ratios in the body. At the moment, I see a dangerous trend of people consuming masses of olive oil. I would not do this before someone tests its effect on omega 3 in the body. So far I have only read good guessing and speculation concerning this matter. It is almost ridiculous that no researcher has ever tested this. If olive oil lowers omega 3, I would cut it from my diet immediatly, since we are all still far away from the ratios of our ancestors which are beloeved to be about 3:1 to 1:1. And since our ancestor’s habits seem to be a very popular field of research lately, I would like to add and ask: Where did they get so much olive oil everyday?
