Ive been taking mirtazapine for 4 yrs to help with withdrawal from klonopin my gyno asst gave me when I was taking care of my mom and not doing well. So it seemed to be helpful for sleep and didnt have side effects except some weight gain.
In winter 2018 I finally felt i was nearly all healed and was back in the gym etc. My concern in the article is about the inflammatory response from the med. 2019 I had a nightmare tenant that I didnt know how to cope with.(anxiety) I saw a dr of oriental med who said i had chronic stress that disregulated my hpa. Over active stress response. burning muscle pain had been coming back, exhaustion, anxiety, brainfog, weakness and a terrible fear response. I am still afraid of normal things. (Still get some pain episodes etc. symptoms similar to the benzo wdrawl.)
He said i need to meditate eat clean etc and it takes time to heal. Didnt say anything about the mirtazapine. So this condition will again gradually heal i am hoping cause i have had no dr that seems to know anything. It appears to be very related to the extremely stressful winter i had but I wondered if Im susceptible to the inflammatory diseases because of the drug and now I have one?! How prevalent is the TNE-a with use of this drug?
Also I read it contributes to gaba via seratonin that the drug works on.. which scares me cause I thought my gaba receptors were healing from stopping the klonopin..so now am I just damaging them again w a different drug? Im so worried. Am I tolerant to the drug all of a sudden or was it the stress of that one winter and i have to re-heal my nervous system? pls help w reassurance of some kind i dont know what to do

I couldn’t stand coz heart rate shot up to 180bpm fro 54 sitting as soon as I did causing me to faint, i couldn’t eat, sleep, constant twitching and adrenaline rushes throughout my body, peeing every 20 mins. It was pure hell. After numerous tests and finding nothing wrong it was concluded that stress has caused my body to have a breakdown characterized by all physical symptoms. Mirtazapine saved my life and within 3 days I was back to my happy bubbly self whereas before all I did all day was cry because I felt so so ill (it was like my body was in a constant state of pure terror). I actually went to bed each night wishing I wouldn’t wake up as each day was so horrendous. I tried other anti depressants before Mirt (Prozac and Sertraline) and they both made me feel worse (if that was even possible!) Mirtazapine was amazing for me. I am still on them but weaning myself off very slowly. I think its quite possible I would have killed myself if it hadn’t been for these little pills. No I am not depressed and have a lovely happy life, i just went through a very stressful year and my body gave in.

The teams I have are becoming increasingly scary. What Im wondering though is is it possible, in time and with discipline to lose the weight? My doctor knows I am concerned about antidepressants causing weight gain. Can you recommend any anti depressants that don’t have the side effect of me eating so much?

This is personal thing what is the half life of the drug in your body and of course whether you feel better.

Sorry to hear about your depression, Lynn. If Mirtazapine is not working for your depression at your current dosage, please let your healthcare provider know about that and discuss further options.

I thought that I might share some experiences that I faced. I have been using mirtazapine for I think 20 years now along with lamotrigin and bentzodiatsepins. About 15 years with dose 60mg and 5 years with dose 30mg. I remember it took 5-6 months to overcome the sleepyness. I used to sleep on lunch break and coffee break at work. Nowadays the only side effects that I recognise are in cholesterol that is 4.9-5 in total but the level of good cholesterol is low. Other is the pain relief effect. It is really hard to describe back pain for example as there is no normal feeling of pain and normally no pain feeling even my foot might feel numb and walking might be hard due prolapsia is pressing on nerves and there should be pain. For me mirtazapine and electric shock therapy have been life saver and things that have enabled normal work and family life. It is very strong medicine. Some benefits one gets quite fast but to my experience it takes patience to overcome some of the side effects. In the long use mirtazapine seems to have minor side effects.

As long as I take the medicine at a normal bedtime like 8 or 9 I am fine by morning. I only weigh about a hundred pounds and my appetite has increased so much so that I often feel too full. This is a good thing for me though because I’ve always been underweight with a BMI around 16. I’m taking this medicine for depression and for a sleep aid but not for weight gain even though I’m very happy about this side effect. I do not have anorexia because I do not have a distorted body image and I know that I need to gain weight. All that said, I’ve always had anxiety about eating certain foods and have always been a very picky eater. I started using this medication for depression and partly because I wanted to stop using marijuana to increase my appetite. I did not know of this medication before it was described by my doctor. I’ve been on other anxiety and depression medication such as Wellbutrin and Prozac and Zoloft and had very serious emotional side effects from these medications. I have not experienced the same side effects with this medication such as feeling like a zombie or more depressed. I think I will continue to use this medication until I’ve been taking it for the recommended time period to to ensure that it has taken it’s full effect.

I had only been taking Xanax for about 4 months, and not every day… but it was long enough for my body to become dependent. Not only that, but this wasn’t the first time that i did that… and every time, i would just quit cold turkey, not knowing I was addicted / dependent. NOT RECOMMENDED! Google something called the Kindling Effect — each time you do this, the withdrawal symptoms get worse.

I will say that at 7.5 mg, the Mirtazapine definitely does help with sleep. It helps put me to sleep, and I seem to stay asleep better. It’s been about 1 month now since my last dose of Xanax (I tapered down slowly this time, finally understanding the problem), and I’m still having some after effects. Some days I feel really terrible, but mainly whats happening now is sleep disturbances. Thus my reach for the Mirtazapine.

So far, I haven’t noticed any side effects from it. Although I will admit to getting a bit scared when I read about the troubles others have had! But I have also read several reports of people getting off of Benzodiazepines, and how they really were helped by Mirtazapine for the insomnia/sleep disturbances that inevitably come along with getting off of benzos. I don’t want to take ANY pills anymore, especially the mental / psychotropic ones. But at this stage, I’m grateful to have the Mirtazapine. I definitely don’t plan on taking it permanently, but its been helping a lot with sleep.

-strong falling asleep aid
-did not have heart problems and bruxism like with citalopram
-seemed to help with depression at the begining
-make me paranoid
-increase my social phobia
-make me horny as f..k to the point I couldn’t met any person, whoever it was, an ugly old shop keeper, my teacher or old time friend to not feel sexual arousal. It basicly f….d up my sexual orientation, I started reacting to everyone, even animals and people that wasn’t there, just I thought someone was there…
Before this drug at the age of 26 I consider myself full heterosexual, after the drug I become pansexual.
Most horrible and traumatising drug experience ever from which I never recovered.
Not recomended.

Try cutting the tablet in half

I was taken to hospital by ambulance and diagnosed with depression w/anxiety and insomnia. My dose of Citalopram is 30 mgs and Mirt is 30. Some positives after 6 weeks :
1) better sleep
2) wait gain as I needed it.
3) Depression seems to be lifting
Now the negatives,
1) more anxious than before starting these meds. I am relying on Ativan to keep the anxiety manageable.
2) irritable and rather short tempered
The trouble I am having is that I wonder which med is responsible for any of the positives and negatives above. It could be a combination of the two. I plan on giving it another 4-6 weeks to determine whether or not to continue. I am leaning more to dropping the Mirtazapine because of the fear mongering on various site I peruse that is very off putting, to say the least. I know that if I was to drop the mirt, it would be under my doctor’s supervision. For instance, It would have been more difficult to type this reply if not for the calming effect from a 1 mg Ativan. I am 69 years old and not concerned about dependence on Ativan as I don’t intend to stop a daily dose at this late stage in my life.

3)

I am a little less anxious but during the day I feel like a slug.
I may try another brand next but disappointed

My doc recommended I double my dose back to 7.5Mg since I’ve been depressed and anxious. I slept OK but just had a brain zap before dinner and lost my appetite. Not fun.
I have been using aurobindo brand but I’ve read that Teva is better so I had him order those from CVS. Hopefully they can get them.
Kind of afraid to keep using 7.5 Mg though as I really don’t want to get back into the drug merry go round.

I’m waking at 4 or 5 a.m. and not being able to go back to sleep. I need at least 7 hrs . Trying to get to bed earlier, hoping it’s just a blip.

I’ve been on 15mg of it at night for about three years (along with Zoloft for anxiety). I was not sleeping well because of anxiety and my weight was always low from a very high metabolism, I just couldn’t gain weight. Once I started Remeron my sleeping problems went away and I gained 20 pounds. I will say this though to the side effect of weight gain, if you aren’t trying to gain weight it’s probably hard to combat that. Overall I think it’s pretty tolerable in terms of side effects.
