I started using a hormone Melatonin for 4 months to help me sleep. My husband sleeps really late, and I would join him. By the time he went to sleep, I was always overtired and I could not sleep at all. So I tried a “natural” alternative melatonin.

Three months later, I noticed my period flow change. It was always normal before I used the supplement/hormone, but after the third month while using, my period flow changed and was extremely light/scanty.

I read Melatonin modulates aromatase activity and also that melatonin inhibits aromatase promoter expression by regulating cyclooxygenases expression and activity (in breast cancer cells).

I also read that melatonin increases Somatotropin, therefore inhibits Somatostatin. I read elsewhere, that somatotropin can cause disruption in the menstrual cycle also.

I also read that melatonin decreases endometrial tissue and endometrial epithelial cell lines (is there any way to increase these?) , and also prevents ovulation. I read it also damages sperm production, and testosterone in men.

I took the melatonin for four months in total, my menstrual cycle changed on the third month, I didn’t relate the period to the melatonin, and so I took it for an extra month. On the fourth month, my period was still light, so there was no doubt, it was from the melatonin, so I stopped taking it completely. Even after stopping the melatonin, my period never went back to normal again.

I went to the gynecologist and everything appears normal on paper (blood work) only my FSH and LH appear lower than normal (not insufficient though), but my flow is abnormal. Is there any way to fix it?

I have tried all of the above, prostaglandins (arachidonic acid), emmenagogues, progesterone, dhea and even clomid and nothing. Maybe I need stem cell therapy, if that even exists?

Also, I am 35 now, and I was 31 when it all happened. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It does converts “bad” metabolite of estron 16αOHE1 to “good” one 2OHE1 but has no relations to estradiol itself. Therefore it is good oncoprotector against target organs such cervix, uterus, ovaries and breast.
