Gut health/microbiome impacts your health so much. It’s so good to see it getting more and more attention in the last few years. So few people really know the deets on it even though it’s so important to our health.

All the info on this blog is for your information only and not prescriptive. It’s more of a comprehensive scientific review simplified for the lay audience, and, for this post, it is reflective of a growing body of research. We can’t possibly tell on a blog post what will work for each reader. For individual case analysis and personalized recommendations, you can book a consultation with one of our consultants.

I realise you can only give us choices and we can pick and choose like a smorgasbord and really it’s a choice of either what we like or what we feel is most beneficial. I guess I’m not the only one asking how long is a piece of string. Most of us aren’t scientists and are used to be told what to do rather than saying these are the healthier choices. See what works for you because we don’t know every detail about every person. Would that be correct.

That is a good point. However this is also a complex issue. Yogurt and fermented milk have a high amount of beneficial bacteria – even more so than many probiotics. Cocoa, on the other hand, has flavonoids and many other ingredients. Mediterranean diet is known because of its high content of unsaturated fats (olive oil). And certainly not all saturated fats are bad. It’s more about the overall balance of the diet. The text has been modified to reflect your point.

Foods that Improve Gut Microbiota
– Yogurt [R, R, R, R] and fermented milk (kefir) [R, R, R]
– Cocoa [R, R]

Long-term consumption of a Mediterranean diet increases butyrate producers (these have many health benefits) [R].

.. which are full of saturated fat (including the Mediterranean diet) ..
with this statement:

Foods with Negative Effects on Gut Bacteria
– Saturated fats [R, R]

And the SFCAs and butyrate which are beneficially produced by the gut bacteria themselves as you referenced… Yet these fats are ALSO saturated fats

You guys need to do some meta-analysis and critiques of the studies (i.e. lack of isolation of variables) because I have been noticing that many references cited are contradictory.

Discussions about gut bacteria often end up focusing almost entirely on probiotics. Those are helpful, sure. But, they’re only one part of a much more comprehensive equation.
