Thank you for your very interesting article. My 17 year old son has Gilbert’s syndrome. He has no symptoms except for the yellowing of his eyes. Otherwise he is a healthy teenage boy. I heard of calcium d glucarate and Dinndolyinemethane to help bilirubin levels. I got him this supplement which had helped him tremendously especially with the yellowing of his eyes. What is your opinion on this. I do know my son probably has high estrogen levels in his body because he also had gynaecomastica. Whilst taking this supplements it went away. Drs told me not to take anything and that the Gilbert’s is nothing serious, but as a mother I do worry although he is fine. I give him the supplements on my own accord and not the Doctors. Although Gilbert’s is harmless they say. The high bilirubin levels do worry me. I haven’t had them checked since he went on supplements as it took the yellowing away. All his other blood works were fine.

Regards. Maryann

I was trying to understand this article. I had a GI test that said I had no glucuronidase it was 0
Can you explain article for that…low beta-glucuronidase
Does that mean I cannot detox well? I truly have that problem no matter what I eat. If so…any suggestions to help?

It is another piece in the jigsaw puzzle to resolving my SIBO and endrometriosis condition. The two are definitely linked and I didn’t know how exactly but this article explains a lot. The endometriosis got a lot worse as SIBO symptoms developed. I’ll take some of these dietary recommendations on board and see if I can clear some estrogen. Fingers crossed.
I have always wondered if it was chicken or egg first. Would this mean SIBO caused excess estrogen or increased estrogen caused SIBO?

Hi Rhonda, milk thistle supports detoxification in humans. It does block glucuronidation in cells, but overall increases antioxidants and detox enzymes in humans, which overrides the effect observed in cells. Milk thistle also helps the liver regenerate. This goes to say that we can’t always assume how a herb will act in humans based on a single cell study–the human body is much more complex. For more info about milk thistle, please read through this article: https://selfhacked.com/blog/milk-thistle/

Milk thistle is good or bad for detox support? Anyone, please commend if they have data. Thanks

This can increase risk of breast cancer

Just wanted to add a comment regarding Gilbert’s Syndrome, as it made me a bit nervous to see it in bold in your article as a risk factor for cancer (I might have misunderstood). I do have Gilbert’s Syndrome and I thought I have read over the years that it is protective from CVD and cancer, due to slightly elevated billirubin’s significant antioxidant protection. A lot of reading is easily found on this subject and PubMed has a study ”Iatrogenic Gilbert syndrome — a strategy for reducing vascular and cancer risk by increasing plasma unconjugated bilirubin”. Anyway, just thought this might be useful info for those with Gilbert’s Syndrome :)
