This haplotype occurs most densely amongst northern-most Scandinavians (cf saunas) and especially in the Sami people who are thought to have migrated from Siberia c 4000 years ago. HLA-B27+ is also shared with Native American Indians which is consistent with an onwards migration beyond northern Scandinavia.

I speculate that none of the foregoing would be strangers to extreme cold which, in turn, would be an inhospitable environment for the bacterial (esp gram negative) and viral infections which trigger the pathologies and I’d guess occur more often in the more southerly dreary, wet temperate climes such as the UK, my domicile (I’m HLA-B27+, subtype unknown). Over the years I’ve suffered increasingly dramatically from Staph aureus, E coli, Parvovirus & Coxsackie before discovering this haplotype.

Lectin avoidance makes sense too. Aside from the adverse impact thereof on (1) protein digesting enzymes (2) neurotransmitter receptors in the gut and (3) facilitating bacteria & viruses locking on to their intended targets, lectins such as potatoes and other new world foods wouldn’t have been environmental staples around which the haplotype evolved.

As far as probiotics are concerned, and where pathology exists alongside HLA-B27+, I’d advocate being mindful of histamine- and d-lactate-producing probiotics which can manipulate Th1/Th2 dominance. This is all very helpfully covered on this website and elsewhere. B. longum BB536 has proved useful to me for systemic E coli infection and am trialling L. plantarum for a long term Coxsackie infection. Research published on both indicates their respective effectiveness on these pathogens.

Seems to me that intractable illness always benefits from knowing our origins and genetics. Sadly this can take too long in a medical environment which is at least a generation behind the times.

Many thanks for all the invaluable information on this site. It’s one of my few go-to’s.
